Penn State+rsquo;s School of Theatre is hiring a Scenic Carpenter to support Centre Stage, its primary production and experiential learning program. The role combines scenic fabrication, production support, equipment management, and student mentorship in a collaborative theatre environment.
Key responsibilities include constructing and fabricating scenery and props; coordinating projects with students, faculty, and community members; maintaining inventories and equipment; and ensuring safe storage and operation of production materials. The specialist will also teach, supervise, mentor, and coach students and part-time workers while supporting classes, productions, and performances.
The position requires compliance with building, health, safety, and fire regulations and involves operating machinery, personnel lifts up to 35 feet, and a 16-foot box truck. Employees must regularly lift up to 75 pounds and occasionally work weekends.
Candidates must have at least three years of scene-shop experience and demonstrated proficiency in independently fabricating wood and metal scenic elements using industry-standard techniques, tools, and practices. A bachelor+rsquo;s degree with three or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Preferred qualifications include experience working with and mentoring students in an educational setting, as well as proficiency with CNC router tables and counterweight rigging systems.
