The New York Transit Museum explores the development of the greater New York metropolitan region through the presentation of exhibitions, tours, educational programs, and workshops dealing with the cultural, social, and technological history of public transportation. Since its inception over 50 years ago, the Museum, housed in an historic 1936 subway station in Downtown Brooklyn, has grown in scope and popularity. The Museum also maintains a gallery at Grand Central Terminal, an archive, and an off-site collections storage facility. As custodian and interpreter of the region's extensive public transportation networks, the Museum strives to share this rich and vibrant history with local, regional, and international audiences.

OVERVIEW
Friends of the New York Transit Museum (FOTNYTM) seeks a skilled and detail-oriented Exhibit Technician to support the daily operations, maintenance, and repair of our exhibitions, to report to the Senior Manager of Exhibits. As a member of the exhibit team, the Exhibit Technician performs regular maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of exhibits at the Brooklyn and Grand Central Terminal locations. In addition, this position helps fabricate, prepare, and install and dismantle exhibitions, and may work across all Museum related properties including the archive in Sunset Park. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND

RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to acting as the point person to address day-to-day repairs, the Exhibit Technician will be responsible for short-term fixes (ex. replacing bulbs), medium-term fixes (ex. replacing parts, painting), and long-term initiatives (ex. exhibit fabrication and installation support).
+bull; Work with Curatorial/Collections, Operations, and Visitor Experience teams to address exhibit issues and fix them in a timely manner ensuring public safety.
+bull; Identify and source repair-related materials and work with Senior Exhibit Manager to purchase supplies and schedule repairs.
+bull; Develop and document procedures that streamline exhibit operations and routine fixes. Help train relevant staff.
+bull; Identify, scope, research, and design solutions to on-going maintenance issues.
+bull; Create and maintain exhibit maintenance schedule and records
+bull; Maintain on site tools, equipment and parts required to repair exhibits
+bull; Provide ongoing maintenance, diagnostics, and technical support for the annual Holiday Train Show model layout and its operating trains to ensure reliable, high-quality performance throughout the exhibition.
+bull; Perform minor maintenance on the vintage fleet on display in the Museum (for example: changing light blubs, updating ads, or light cleaning)
+bull; Utilize basic graphic design and layout skills to update, repair, or produce exhibit labels, signage, and other visual materials.
+bull; Coordinate with MTA New York City Transit employees for upkeep of vintage fleet on display
This list is not exhaustive, and candidates must possess the flexibility to assess and address issues as they arise. Typical daily tasks may include basic carpentry, painting, vinyl repair/installation, case cleaning.


QUALIFICATIONS
+bull; Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving skills in troubleshooting
+bull; Familiarity and comfort working with electrical systems
+bull; Knowledge of carpentry, metal and plastics, and basic AV systems. General mechanical aptitude a plus
+bull; Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the repair of exhibits and general building maintenance
+bull; Ability to balance the priorities of repair, maintenance, exhibit experience, and audience safety.
+bull; Demonstrated ability to repair items with and without a manual. +bull; Ability to work in loud environments that serve adults and children
+bull; Demonstrate flexibility in approach to addressing issues
+bull; Ability to communicate with colleagues both in verbal and written forms.
+bull; Knowledge and interest in model trains and/or art handling a plus
+bull; Must be able to lift 50 lbs, navigate stairs throughout the facility, stand for extended periods, and safely access confined or awkward spaces as needed for exhibit maintenance.

+bull; Computer proficiency required, familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite preferred
+bull; Driver+rsquo;s license preferred
