Ramsey Theatre Company is seeking a collaborative, skilled, and highly organized Technical Director to oversee the technical execution of all scenic builds for the company+rsquo;s seasonal productions. This position is responsible for the drafting and realizing of scenic designs and the building of practical and safe working sets, as well as overseeing the scene shop and leading the installation and strike of scenery for approximately 3 mainstage productions and 2 BGOnstage youth productions annually.
Working closely with the Producing Artistic Director and and/all members of the Design and Production teams, the Technical Director ensures that scenic elements are built to design specifications, within budget, and on schedule, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and craftsmanship.
This role also assists with load-ins and load-outs for touring Broadway productions and other productions at SKyPAC as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Drafting + Planning:
Translate scenic designer+rsquo;s drawings into technical drafting and construction plans using Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar software.
Produce working drawings and shop plans for scenic builds and coordinate with other departments (lighting, sound, costumes, etc.) to ensure technical compatibility.
Determine structural requirements, materials, and construction methods for all scenic elements.
Project Management + Supervision:
Build and oversee the construction, installation, maintenance, and strike of all scenic elements.
Serve as lead carpenter and supervise overhire labor, apprentices, interns, or volunteers as needed.
Maintain production calendars and meet deadlines in coordination with the Producing Artistic Director and other departments.
Ensure scenery is built safely, efficiently, and in line with design and artistic vision.
Budgeting + Procurement:
Estimate, manage, and track scenic materials budgets.
Source, purchase, and organize materials, hardware, and supplies as needed for each production.
Maintain receipts, purchase orders, and budget logs.
Safety + Facility Maintenance:
Ensure safe working conditions in the shop and backstage, and onstage during production.
Maintain tools and equipment in scene shop, and enforce safety protocols in compliance with OSHA and company policies.
Manage and organize shop inventory, storage areas, and scene dock.
SKyPAC Support
Assist the SKyPAC Production Team with Broadway Series tour load-ins and load-outs as assigned as well as other productions as needed (and as available).
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Proficiency in technical drafting software (Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or equivalent)
Ability to interpret and create construction drawings.
Advanced scenic carpentry skills, including framing, rigging, and finish work.
Working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and stationary machinery.
Strong knowledge of theatrical safety standards and best practices.
Proven budget management and cost estimation experience.
Ability to lead a team, delegate tasks, and supervise both skilled and unskilled labor.
Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and extended hours during tech, load-ins, and strikes.
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
Valid driver+rsquo;s license and ability to lift 50+ lbs preferred
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience working in regional, educational, or touring theatre environments.
Knowledge of welding, rigging, or scenic automation is a plus.
Familiarity with youth theatre or educational programs a bonus.
