Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) is an award-winning public charter arts school in Santa Ana, CA, celebrated for its unparalleled, rigorous academic program and pre-professional arts training. With a goal of serving more students, California School of the Arts +ndash; San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) opened in August 2017 as our first sister campus in Duarte, CA.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Director of Productions, the Technical Director oversees the planning, engineering, and execution of all scenic and technical elements for school productions and events. The Technical Director collaborates with directors, designers, faculty, and production staff to translate artistic vision into practical solutions within budget and facility constraints. Success in this role requires strong organization, a solid work ethic, and effective communication with a wide range of
stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Lead the planning and execution of scenic elements for all productions, serving as the primary technical authority
* Translate designs into technical drawings, construction plans, and material specs, ensuring that designs are achievable
within budget, timeline, and facility constraints
* Supervise and actively participate in the construction, installation, and strike of scenery and related technical elements
* Collaborate closely with the Director of Productions, directors, designers, and faculty to problem solve, refine designs, and ensure alignment between artistic vision and technical execution
* Oversee and manage associated workspaces, including tool maintenance, inventory management, organization, and long-term sustainability of resources
* Establish and enforce safe working practices in all shop and stage environments, including training students on proper tool and equipment use and maintaining compliance with safety standards
* Coordinate the sourcing of materials and equipment required for productions, and when appropriate, coordinating rentals or borrowed items in collaboration with the Director of Productions
* Provide technical oversight for the installation of scenic elements within performance spaces, ensuring coordination
with lighting, audio, rigging, and other production disciplines. Maintain clear documentation of builds, materials, and
processes, and support overall production efficiency
* Attend and contribute to production meetings, offer technical guidance and identify potential challenges
* Mentor and guide student crews, providing hands-on support in the development of technical skills, professionalism,
and work ethic
