Position Title: Assistant Technical Director
Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Position Summary
The Assistant Technical Director is a full-time, benefits-eligible position reporting to the Technical Director. This position works closely with the Technical Director, Production Manager, and other members of the production team, as well as the Artistic Director, choreographers, and ballet masters, to support the technical requirements of company rehearsals, performances, and special events.
The Assistant Technical Director serves in a hands-on role supporting the technical and operational needs of the production department. Responsibilities include scenic construction, repairs, load-ins, performances, load-outs, warehouse organization, facilities support, stage crew supervision, and assisting with production planning and scheduling as needed.
The Assistant Technical Director plays a key role in maintaining safe, efficient, and professional production operations while helping ensure the successful execution of all company productions and events.
This position requires the ability to safely lift and move scenery and other objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performances and Events
+bull; The Assistant Technical Director supports the Technical Director and Production Manager in planning and executing all performances and events, including but not limited to:
+bull; Assisting in identifying interdepartmental production needs for rehearsals, performances, and special events.
+bull; Collaborating with the Technical Director, Production Manager, Lighting Designer, Scenic Designer, and Stage Manager to develop and revise lineset schedules, crew calls, and running sheets.
+bull; Assisting with trucking schedules, load plans, and related crew assignments.
+bull; Creating and maintaining truck pack inventories.
+bull; Ensuring supplies, rentals, and equipment required for load-ins, rehearsals, and performances are acquired and prepared.
+bull; Working with Props, Carpentry, and other departments to inspect, repair, and maintain production elements.
+bull; Attending production meetings and assisting with follow-up action items.
Performance responsibilities include:
+bull; Serving as a crew lead during load-ins and load-outs in both supervisory and hands-on capacities.
+bull; Participating on run crew during technical rehearsals and performances, including moving scenery and props.
+bull; Supporting the Technical Director, Production Manager, and Stage Manager in maintaining a safe working environment.
+bull; Assisting in the creation and maintenance of production documentation for future remounts.
+bull; Assuming responsibility for backstage technical operations when delegated by the Technical Director or Production Manager.
Show Construction
+bull; Assist the Technical Director in developing construction drawings and material lists from scenic designs.
+bull; Assist in pricing, sourcing, and acquiring materials and labor.
+bull; Participate in scenic construction projects, including carpentry and basic steel work.
+bull; Support other departments, including props, electrics, paint, and wardrobe, as needed.
+bull; Assist in maintaining production quality and adherence to production schedules.
Warehouse and Equipment Management
+bull; Maintain and develop road cases and storage solutions for scenery, props, and equipment.
+bull; Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces in safe operating condition.
+bull; Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
+bull; Maintain sprung flooring and marley surfaces to ensure cleanliness and safety.
+bull; Track and document equipment inventories, locations, and conditions.
+bull; Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering commonly used production materials and supplies.
Studios, Rehearsals, and Facilities
As part of a smaller production team, the Assistant Technical Director may assist with a variety of operational and facility-related responsibilities.
Responsibilities include:
+bull; Working with the Technical Director, Production Manager, Stage Manager, Props, and Artistic Staff to ensure rehearsal scenery and props are available as needed.
+bull; Assisting the Stage Manager with studio setup, markings, and spikes.
+bull; Supporting safe working conditions in rehearsal studios and backstage areas.
+bull; Coordinating the transportation of costumes, scenery, and equipment between facilities as needed.
+bull; Maintaining studio flooring, rehearsal equipment, and technical equipment in safe working order.
+bull; Assisting with facility maintenance projects and improvements related to production operations.
+bull; Supporting seasonal programs, special events, and company activities as assigned.
Other Duties
Perform other duties as assigned in support of Carolina Ballet's productions, facilities, and operations.
Requirements and Preferred Skills
+bull; Strong carpentry skills required.
+bull; Welding experience strongly preferred.
+bull; Strong organizational and project management skills.
+bull; Ability to safely lift and move objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
+bull; Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
+bull; Experience with CAD or drafting software strongly preferred.
+bull; Previous experience supervising crews or leading technical projects preferred.
+bull; Excellent communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills.
+bull; Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
+bull; Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced performing arts environment.
