The Public Theater seeks an experienced and collaborative Head Audio to join our production department. As the primary production audio professional for The Public, this role carries responsibility for all audio elements across our multi-theater complex+mdash;from intimate studio spaces to our flagship stages. The Head Audio oversees and executes the full spectrum of audio operations, ensuring the highest standards of sound quality and technical execution for every performance, rehearsal, and event.

The Head Audio supervises all audio operations during load-ins, load-outs, changeovers, and technical and preview rehearsals.

This position is covered under an IATSE, Local 1 collective bargaining agreement.


Audio Operations

Lead and manage all audio operations for performances, rehearsals, and events across multiple venues within The Public Theater complex and remote locations.
Oversee the load-in, setup, system tuning, maintenance, and strike of all sound systems, including reinforcement, playback, communications, and assistive listening systems.
Maintain and troubleshoot audio equipment and ensure operational readiness of all systems across all venues.


Collaboration + Communication

Serve as the primary collaborative intermediary between designers, directors, and creative teams, supporting and realizing the audio vision for each production.
Collaborate closely with production management staff and department heads to coordinate schedules, staffing, and technical requirements.
Collaborate with the Music Manager and department heads on all backline setup.
Communicate clearly and effectively with stage management, designers, and all technical departments throughout the production process.
Support special events and other Public Theater programming as assigned.


Crew Leadership + Administration

Engage, supervise, and direct audio crew and overhire, ensuring safe and efficient work practices at all times.
Provide mentorship and guidance to assistants, overhire crews, fellows, interns, and apprentices.
Ensure compliance with all applicable safety standards, IATSE Local 1 work rules, and The Public Theater policies; maintain and enforce a safe working environment for all audio and rigging operations.
Assist with budget tracking, labor forecasting, payroll, and materials management related to audio operations.
Maintain availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the production schedule.


QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum five years of professional experience in theatrical audio production, preferably in a multi-venue or repertory environment.
Demonstrated proficiency in audio system setup, network configurations, alignment, and operation, including digital consoles (e.g., DiGiCo, Yamaha, or equivalent).
Experience mixing musicals, plays, and special events.
Strong working knowledge of wireless microphone systems, QLab, intercom systems, and audio networking.
Flexible schedule with consistent availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by production needs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in theater spaces on and off stage.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work at heights or on scaffolding is required.
Evening and weekend hours are standard based on production needs.
This is a non-exempt position, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

As per the IATSE, Local 1 collective bargaining agreement, minimum rate of $42.00 per hour.
