The Post Theatre Company, the producing arm of the Department of Theatre and Arts Management at Long Island University in Brookville, NY, located at 720 Northern Boulevard, is seeking a Sound Designer/Audio Engineer/Front of House Mixer for the 2026-27 Season. Designers may be hired for a single production or multiple productions depending on availability and fit. The Designer will only mix for Musical productions.

Fall productions are Lillian Hellman+rsquo;s The Children+rsquo;s Hour, The Figs by Doug Robinson, + Pippin (2013 Revival Version). Spring productions are Big Love and a TBA musical, which will be part of the Post Theatre Company+rsquo;s New Works Initiative, along with the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.

Compensation is set at $2500.00 per production, pending final budget review for the 2026-27 academic year. Additional compensation will be provided if Designer mixes the technical rehearsals and production of Pippin, along with supervising a student audio deck crew. Guest Artists at Long Island University are hired as 1099 Independent Contractors.

Scope of Work

Scope of work includes advance design meetings with the director and PTC staff; collaborating with the Director and design team to develop a soundscape; general sound design and sound effect gathering and cueing ; attending designer runs; supervising students operating sound and audio equipment; equipment setup and engineering; working with the department+rsquo;s existing inventory; and suggesting potential supplemental rental options within the provided production budget. For the musical, this includes working with up to 24 body mics and a live orchestra of approximately 6+ndash;10 musicians.

The theatre is equipped with a QLab-based playback system, Allen + Heath SQ7 digital console, and an existing speaker infrastructure. The Sound Designer will work primarily with the department+rsquo;s existing inventory and may suggest supplemental equipment to rent within the provided production budget.

The Sound Designer will not be expected to run performances of plays but will supervise and train student board operators.

Participation in strike is not required.

Contract Dates

Required attendance for all Tech and Dress/Tech dates + 1-2 additional days onsite in advance for prep of space +ndash; cable and speaker runs, microphone testing, sitzprobe for musical, etc.

Production Meetings occur weekly on Fridays between 1pm-2pm. A Microsoft Teams link will be provided for those not onsite.
