SUMMARY
The Properties Assistant works all productions for Pacific Northwest Ballet and assists the Head of Properties with the build and maintenance of all prop elements for Pacific Northwest Ballet and all assigned events or outside projects. This position supports the Properties department by performing a wide range of tasks including working as production run crew, warehousing, shipping and receiving, trucking and transportation coordination, running errands, cleaning, and supporting performing artists and guest artistic staff. The Properties Assistant also works with the Head of Properties to ensure the safe running and supervision of local crew and also work with other stage departments to complete the needs of the show.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
- Supports the Head of Properties with planning, coordinating and delivery of daily operations of the department. This includes reviewing props lists, rehearsal notes, prop running paperwork, orchestra pit plots, and all additional necessary information.
- Assist in the creation and acquisition, quality control and completion of all prop elements as specified by Head of Properties
- Assist in gathering, delivery and build of rehearsal and performance prop items.
- Understand construction methods and material choices for assigned projects and discuss priority lists with Head of Properties before construction.
- With Head of Properties support, order, pick up, and acquire materials needed to complete builds.
- Participate in preparation, construction and maintenance of props for each production, as well as load-ins/load-outs, all technical rehearsals, performances and strike back/restores for programs.
- Support warehouse calls and activities as required.
- Must execute all assignments in a timely manner to ensure critical deadlines are met.
- Participate in packing of all prop elements, tools, hardware and materials required for all load-ins, load-outs, strikes and rentals.
- Assist with the offloading of all stage equipment from a Semi or other conveyance to include equipment required for the specifics of a particular production.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of performance and rehearsal props as necessary.


- Participate in the load-in, load-out, technical notes and strikes of all prop elements and set dressing.
- Participate in end of day shop cleaning and organization projects as needed.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment in all facilities including scene shop and all theatrical spaces
- Complete all projects assigned by Head of Properties in an efficient, safe and timely manner while maintaining a high standard of quality.
- Support and communicate in an open flow of communication with properties staff, stage management and Technical Director.
- Familiarity with how to read Safety Data Sheets and follow appropriate precautions.
- Properly and safely handle, use, and dispose of materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS + SKILLS
- 2-years run crew experience, preferably in dance
- 5-years stagecraft experience, preferably with emphasis in Props.
- Drama or Theater Degree with technical emphasis a plus
- Knowledge of theatrical building practices in soft goods, paper, wood, metal, plastics, foam, and traditional and new materials is required.
- Advanced knowledge of prop construction, modification and fabrication techniques
- Knowledge of how to read show track sheets to anticipate cues and preset props
- Willingness to learn props inventory
- Understanding of how prop presets, show cues, strike backs, restores, load outs, and storage all contribute to ensure props are ready, accurate, and consistent for rehearsals and performances
- Working knowledge of shop tools and standard OSHA safety practices
- Experience with safe handling of hazardous shop materials
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Manual dexterity and an aptitude for working with a variety of materials and techniques
- Self-starting attitude with a commitment to follow through on projects
- Ability to lift 30-50 lbs. alone and up to 90 lbs. with a partner.
- Valid driver+rsquo;s license with safe driving record
- Comfortable driving a 16-foot box truck and up to 24-foot rental truck
- Able to work long hours during heavy build and tech and performance periods
Preferred Qualifications + Skills:
- Strong wood, metal, and finish carpentry skills
- Proficiency in all commonly used theatrical construction tools, including but not limited to: measuring and layout tools, portable and stationary woodworking tools, pneumatic tools, metalworking tools, welding equipment, and sewing machines. Bonus if familiar with rigging tools, machining tools, and cabinetry tools
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide variety of coworkers at different levels of skill and knowledge
- Demonstrated ability to lead a small crew
- Ability to troubleshoot problems in a calm and efficient manner under pressure




PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

+bull; Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Standing +gt;50% of time- While performing essential duties: loading/unloading equipment, setting up equipment, staging props, running props. Standing is mostly dynamic and intermittent with walking. (Surface: varies +ndash; finished/unfinished concrete, gravel, earth, uneven terrain, linoleum, hardwood, plywood, carpet). Must be able to walk up/downstairs.
+bull; Must be able to push/pull/carry boxes and road cases up to 200ft to or from a truck to the stage, staging area or warehouse. Every effort is taken to roll equipment when possible.
+bull; Vision +ndash; corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary
+bull; Sitting/Standing/Walking +ndash; about 80% of the time is spent standing and walking. The position is physical in nature and requires physical mobility including balancing, bending, carrying, climbing, crawling, reaching, squatting, twisting, lifting up to 50 pounds alone, pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds alone.
+bull; Long Hours are expected 10-to-12-hour days are regular, days do not normally go more than 12 hrs.
+bull; Reaching above shoulder height, below the waist or lifting as required to build props, file documents or store materials throughout the workday. Proper lifting techniques required.
+bull; Must be able to lift and move 50 pounds from one position to another, kneel, ascend and descend a ladder/staircase.
+bull; Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
+bull; Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements and theatrical effects, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke or haze, unpleasant odors, strobe lights and/or loud noises.
Conditions will vary between scene shop, work and performance venues.

Pay Range: $42.46/hour; Hourly, Non-Exempt
Start Date: Mid July +ndash; Early August 2026
Work Hours: Rehearsal, performance and scene shop schedules are provided in advance and consistent with terms outlined in the PNB-IATSE 15 collective bargaining agreement. Availability must include frequent nights, weekends, and the occasional holiday.
Except for tech weeks and performance schedules, the work schedule and hours worked per week will vary depending on needs of the production and company.
Benefits: Eligibility for benefits is managed through the jointly administered multi-employer plan established by IATSE 15, requiring specific hours worked across participating employers for coverage.
