JOB TITLE: Literary Assistant

REPORTS TO: Director of New Works

FLSA STATUS: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

POSITION DATES: August 2026- August 2027

COMPENSATION RATE: $18.00/hour

LOCATION: 170 N. Dearborn St., Chicago, IL 60601



POSITION SUMMARY:

The Literary Assistant will primarily assist with literary management (tracking, evaluating, and responding to script submissions), dramaturgy, and New Stages programs, in addition to providing administrative support to the Director of New Works.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with the solicitation, cataloguing and evaluation of script submissions

Correspond with playwrights, agents, theaters and play development programs.

Conduct research for plays in production and under consideration, as well as for articles and program notes.

Serve as a production assistant for readings.

Assist with the smooth operation of New Stages programs.

Provide administrative support as needed.

Assist with special event planning, logistics, and execution.

Attend Artistic staff meetings.



QUALIFICATIONS + EXPERIENCE:

Ability to critically read and evaluate plays.

Excellent research, writing and proof-reading skills.

Strong knowledge of and coursework in contemporary theater, theater history and playwriting.

Interest in pursuing a career in dramaturgy, playwriting, directing and/or producing.

Must have excellent people skills, be a self-starter and able to work independently.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent.

Bachelor's degree in Theatre or equivalent experience.
