The Great River Shakespeare Festival is looking for a First Hand for this upcoming repertory season of Pericles and A Midsummer Nights Dream. Must be available from 5/19/2026-6/28/2026. Housing is included.
The First Hand typically works in the costume shop alongside the Draper. The First Hand is responsible for cutting, constructing, altering and finishing any costume pieces and accessories. The First Hand also mentors the costume apprentices in construction techniques.
Job duties include:
- Cut, construct, and finish costumes and accessories as envisioned by the Costume Designers
- Light pattern-making, tailoring, and/or other specialized artisan tasks
- Attend costume fittings and assist in taking actor measurements
- Alter purchased/pulled costumes
- Instruct, mentor and supervise Costume Apprentices in the proper way each project must be constructed, and finished
Qualifications:
This position requires someone punctual, able to take direction, works well with a team, is detail oriented, works well under pressure, and can mentor others effectively.
- At least three years of collegiate or professional experience working in a costume shop or equivalent experience
- Knowledge and ability to use costume shop equipment such as sergers, sewing machines etc. safely
- Ability to teach others safe and proper techniques when using costume shop equipment
- Organizational and time management skills
- Leadership experience preferred
