The Sharon Playhouse, the historic, professional, nonprofit theater located in the foothills of the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, is seeking to fill the role of Scenic Shop Manager for its 2026 season. Our upcoming MainStage season includes Swingtime Canteen, 42nd Street, and Come From Away, as well as our Spotlight Gala, Writer+rsquo;s Playground, and a special reading of The Divine Sister. Our YouthStage season includes Pooh+rsquo;s Parade, Matilda Jr., Big Bad, Shrek Kids, the Launchpad Company production of Zombie Prom, and a school partnership production of Shrek Kids with Indian Mountain School.
The Scenic Shop Manager reports directly to the Leadership Team in collaboration with the Production Manager.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Lead, supervise, and execute scenic construction for all MainStage and YouthStage productions.
Manage and maintain the scenic shop, tools, materials, and storage areas, ensuring a safe, clean, and organized working environment.
Supervise scenic apprentices and/or paid technical staff, providing mentorship and guidance throughout the season.
Collaborate with scenic designers to realize approved designs, advising on build feasibility, materials, costs, and scheduling.
Coordinate scenic load-ins, strikes, and changeovers in collaboration with the Production Manager and other department heads.
Monitor the condition of scenic equipment and materials and perform preventative maintenance. When necessary, arrange for repair or replacement in alignment with the approved operational budget.
Attend production meetings and technical rehearsals to supervise, support, and assist in the execution of scenic elements for all Playhouse productions and events.
Provide scenic support for special events, including the Spotlight Gala and Writer+rsquo;s Playground.
Design and execute scenic elements for the YouthStage production of Pooh+rsquo;s Parade (in the Bok).
Participate in cross-departmental venue support to ensure the overall success of productions and event operations.
Coordinate with Playhouse Staff on all scenic scheduling and facility needs.
With seasonal staff, organize, execute, and maintain the cleanliness of stage, shops/storage, and support areas, including buildings and grounds.
As a member of the senior staff, this position plays an active role in supporting and mentoring Sharon Playhouse apprentices, sharing knowledge and guidance in scenic construction and production practices to foster their growth and development.
Qualifications:
A bachelor+rsquo;s degree in Technical Theater, Scenic Design, Production, or a related field is preferred.
Experience in scenic construction and shop management, particularly in musical theater and repertory settings.
Strong computer proficiency, specifically with Google Docs, Excel, and drafting software (AutoCAD/Vectorworks).
Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently, excellent organizational and time-management skills, a positive attitude, and a collaborative spirit.
Dates of employment are from April 27 +ndash; October 4, 2026. This is a 1099 independent contractor position. Compensation is structured as a weekly consideration of $875 and will be prorated based on arrival date and total weeks worked. Housing is available for non-local applicants. A personal vehicle and valid driver+rsquo;s license are preferred.
