The Appalachian Center for the Arts is seeking a Technical Director to join our team for our 2026 production season. Shows include: Newsies Jr., Madagascar Jr., Almost Maine, Puffs, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The App+rsquo;s Technical Director serves under the general supervision of the Executive Director and in cooperation with the General Manager of the Appalachian Wireless Arena. The Technical Director will work in cooperation with the Executive Director to coordinate and supervise the daily physical functioning of the Appalachian Center for the Arts.

The Appalachian Center for the Arts is a dynamic space for theater, music, visual arts, and community enrichment in downtown Pikeville, KY. The App provides the highest quality arts education designed to encourage collaboration, partnership, and civic engagement for the people in our region. Our stage has been graced by artists ranging from the youth of Kentucky to Broadway veterans to nationally recognized acts who are discovering the beauty of southeast Appalachia for the first time. The App also acts as a catalyst for opening dialogue to meet the region+rsquo;s growing challenges and opportunities. For The App, the arts are essential; a way to promote cultural change and growth, to celebrate and build on the area+rsquo;s rich cultural history, and, most importantly, to enrich and entertain.

The App is a 200 seat arts center with a strong educational and community, based theatre program. The ideal candidate would be a community minded individual who enjoys working with youth and serving as a leader for part time technical staff and volunteers.


Skills + Abilities:
+bull; General knowledge of digital sound and lighting systems, theatre and scene shop safety, and theatre rigging. Proficient in stage craft techniques such as carpentry, scenic painting, basic sewing skills, and basic prop making.
+bull; Knowledge of industry standard staging techniques, lighting design, and sound production.
+bull; Demonstrate exceptional time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
+bull; Make independent judgement of situations based upon the organization's policies and represent The APP in an appropriate manner to staff, students, clients, visiting artists, and the public.
+bull; Plan, implement, and prioritize schedule for productions and events to ensure deadlines are met and work is completed in efficient manner.
+bull; Collaborate with outside organizations and vendors to ensure safe operation of the venue.
+bull; Foster collaborative environment with all working as a team to successfully complete the production elements required.
+bull; Knowledge of OSHA safety standards to provide training, supervise, and instruct employees and volunteers of varying skill levels and ages to ensure all tools are used safely in accordance with professional theatrical standards and OSHA safety guidelines and ensure a safe work environment.
+bull; Help lead a 3 week +ldquo;tech camp+rdquo; with teenage students that coincides with the Madagascar Jr. camp.
+bull; Supervise part time scenic staff, volunteers and student learners in the scene shop.
+bull; Coordinate with Executive Director to ensure all rental contracts are feasible and within the means of the venue's resources.
+bull; Plan and manage production and event budgets while keeping accurate written records and documents.
+bull; Aid with overseeing facility rentals and one offs as time allows.
+bull; Perform physical activities such as but not limited to lifting and bending; able to lift at least 50 pounds occasionally to often; able to work from heights (ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and grids); workdays could long periods of standing or sitting.
+bull; Completing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
+bull; B.A. in Technical Theatre/Production or related field or two years of related work experience.
+bull; Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.
+bull; Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
+bull; Must successfully pass a full background check.
+bull; Evening and weekend work is required.

+bull; Shared housing with a private room within walking distance to the theatre is available for $100 per month. Utilities and internet are included.
+bull; 40 hour work week!
+bull; This is a full time seasonal position running May 11th-December 19th, 2026.
