Greenbrier Valley Theatre is proud to be the State Professional Theatre of West Virginia, dedicated to producing high-quality live performances that enrich our community. Our 2026 season will consist of Ripcord, Greenbrier Ghost, Tuesdays with Morrie, The Mousetrap, and Miracle on 34th Street: The Live Musical Radio Play and we are seeking a creative and detail-oriented Wardrobe Assistant to support our costume operations over a 8-month contract. During a longer dark period between shows, this position will also work as a teaching artist for three weeks of youth summer camp (ages 5-14) under the supervision of the Education Director.

Greenbrier Valley Theatre+rsquo;s Youth Education Program aims to be a safe place to nurture creativity, build confidence, and provide a supportive environment for young performers and students in Greenbrier county. We know that encouraging involvement with the arts for all students in the area helps them develop lifelong skills in public speaking, teamwork, empathy, and creative problem-solving that will serve them in any profession and strengthen the communities in which they live and work. GVT+rsquo;s Youth Education Program offers a variety of programming for students in grades K-12, including after-school drama classes, an annual spring musical, and summer drama camp.

Position Overview
Greenbrier Valley Theatre is seeking a skilled and collaborative Wardrobe Assistant for our 2026 mainstage season. In this role, you will work closely with the Wardrobe Manager and costume design team to help prepare, maintain, and alter costumes for our productions. This position requires a candidate who is a good stitcher with strong sewing and draping skills, making it an ideal opportunity for recent college graduates or emerging professionals seeking a career in theatre or live event production.

The summer camp is three one-week camps for youth, divided by age. Each week is themed, set by the Education Director, and the TA will be responsible for day-to-day running of the camp, teaching crafts, and maintaining the education space.

Key Responsibilities
Assist with costume fittings, alterations, and repairs, ensuring garments meet design specifications and performance needs.

Utilize strong sewing and skills to construct, adjust, and maintain costumes throughout the production.

Prepare costumes for rehearsals and performances, including steaming, laundering, and touch-ups.

Work backstage as costume run crew; supporting quick changes during performances and assisting with load-ins, load-outs, and strikes when required.

Maintain an organized costume inventory and workspace, ensuring all materials and tools are safely stored and readily accessible.

Teaching Artist Responsibilities Include
Splitting responsibility as a lead teaching artist during all Summer Camp classes and rehearsals for students in grades K-2, 3-5, or 6-10. This includes, but is not limited to, pulling props and costumes, assistant teaching, writing, and co-directing classes and showcase plays.

Ensuring the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of all students.

Show skills in leadership, maturity, organization, independence, and initiative.

Oversee and assist throughout camp when necessary.

Required Experience + Skills
Demonstrated experience in sewing, costume construction, or related areas within theatre or fashion.

Strong stitching ability with proficiency in sewing techniques.

Ability to read and interpret costume design plans and technical drawings.

Attention to detail, with excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to work well both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Physical capability to work on your feet for extended periods and perform tasks that may require heavy lifting or manual dexterity.

Flexibility to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends as production schedules demand.

Be able to successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Experience + Skills
A degree or formal training in Costume Design, Fashion Design, Theatre Production, or a related field.

Prior experience working in a professional theatre wardrobe or costume department.

Familiarity with modern sewing machines, fabric types, and garment construction techniques.

Knowledge of safety protocols related to costume handling and maintenance.

Ability to work with children and lead groups of 5-20 at a time.

Employment Details
Salary range for this position is $500 per week for the 8-month contract

Out of town seasonal hires receive a private bedroom with a shared bathroom, living and kitchen space within walking distance of the theatre. Housing is furnished, and basic kitchen supplies and bedding are provided. There is access to complimentary laundry facilities and wifi.

A travel stipend of $150 will be offered for this position.

The contract begins April 13, 2026 and concludes on December 22, 2026.

This is a full-time position requiring a variable schedule to meet production demands, including day, weekend, and evening hours. Compensation on a standard 40-hour work week. Overtime is paid in accordance with state and federal law with managerial approval.

US work authorization is required.

All seasonal employees must have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation.
