The Northbrook Park District is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Theatre Technician - Audio Engineer to join our production team for the upcoming May 2026 performance of Freaky Friday at the Northbrook Theatre.
Pay + Schedule:
Pay Rate: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Rehearsal/Show Schedule is as follows:
Saturday, May 9 - 10:00am-6:00pm
Monday, May 11 - 5:30-9:00pm
Tuesday, May 12 - 5:30-9:00pm
Wednesday, May 13 - 5:30-9:30pm
Thursday, May 14 - 5:30-9:30pm
Friday, May 15 - 5:30-10:00pm
Saturday, May 16 - 5:30-10:00pm
Sunday, May 17 - 12:30-5:00pm
Other hours vary by production
Duties + Responsibilities:
Operate 30+ microphones and sound playback for the Northbrook Community Theatre's production of Freaky Friday in coordination with the show director and production staff. This production will feature a live pit orchestra, requiring the Audio Engineer to mix both vocal and instrumental elements for all rehearsals and performances.
The Audio Engineer will be responsible for:
Meeting with Theatre Production Supervisor and production staff to determine the artistic vision and practical sound needs for the show
Responsible for placing, securing, and monitoring lavalier microphones on 20+ performers throughout rehearsals and performances
Operating the Allen + Heath Avantis Digital Audio Console and QLab to provide audio playback for the show in coordination with stage management at all necessary rehearsals and performances
Removal, cleaning and safe storage of microphones and other sound equipment before and after shows
Attending additional trainings and meetings as required by Northbrook Park District Diligently following and adhering to all safety procedures Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong understanding of live sound, with a focus on musical theatre Familiarity with digital audio consoles (eg., Allen + Heath Avantis)
Working knowledge of Shure Axient wireless microphone systems, including RF management and troubleshooting
Coordinating and mixing live pit orchestra audio, including balancing instrumental sections with vocals to achieve a clear and cohesive musical mix
Setting up and managing pit orchestra microphones (overheads, instrument mics, DI boxes) and ensuring proper gain structure
Collaborating with the Music Director to meet artistic expectations for orchestral sound
Monitoring and adjusting orchestra levels throughout rehearsals and performances to maintain blend and clarity
Managing communication systems (e.g., conductor video feed, talkback, monitors)
Familiarity with Dante audio networking
Knowledge of digital show playback systems, particularly QLab Able to setup, monitor and troubleshoot up to 32 wireless microphone channels simultaneously, including quick fixes during live performances
Able to follow all Park District safety procedures
Work independently and efficiently Establish and maintain effective and productive working relationships with all members of the production team
Strong organizational skills
Interact with a community of artists, volunteers, and participants - children through adult

Requirements
An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in Technical Theatre with an emphasis in sound design OR significant (2+) years in a similar position. Able to work independently and efficiently and possess strong organizational skills.
