Theatre By The Sea 2026 Season
(Wakefield, RI)

Position Overview
Theatre By The Sea (TBTS) is seeking a Fly Chief for its 2026 summer season. The Fly Chief is a core member of the scenic department and is responsible for overseeing all fly system operations for a four-show musical season.

This position is embedded in scenic operations and is actively involved in changeovers, technical rehearsals, and performances for every production. The Fly Chief works closely with the Technical Director, Assistant Technical Director, Deck Chief, Stage Management, and run crew to ensure safe, consistent, and efficient fly operations throughout the season.

All flying at TBTS is executed on a hemp rigging system. Applicants must be comfortable operating a hemp system independently.

This role is ideal for an experienced fly operator who values safety, consistency, and being a steady presence in a fast-paced summer stock environment.

Primary Responsibilities
Serve as the Fly Chief for all productions, assigned to every changeover, technical rehearsal, and performance
Oversee the safe operation of the hemp fly system during rehearsals and performances
Lead fly operations during scenic load-ins, load-outs, and changeovers
Coordinate with the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director regarding scenic installations and flying needs
Collaborate with the Deck Chief and Stage Management to integrate fly cues into overall deck operations
Train, supervise, and support fly operators and overhire as needed
Monitor line sets, counterweights, and flying elements for safety and maintenance needs
Identify and proactively communicate fly-related concerns, staffing needs, or system issues
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe fly rail and backstage environment

Qualifications
Prior experience as a Fly Chief, Fly Operator, or equivalent role in regional or summer stock theatre
Strong working experience with hemp rigging systems (required)
Thorough understanding of fly system safety, load balancing, and best practices
Ability to lead crews with calm authority and clear communication
Comfort working closely with Stage Management and Production Management teams
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a scenic department and production team

Schedule + Commitment
Full-season commitment required (including load-in and load-out)
Positions are scheduled for 32-40 hours per week
Evening and weekend work required based on rehearsal, performance, and production schedules
Overtime is limited, requires prior approval, and is typically confined to technical rehearsal and changeover weeks

Compensation
Competitive weekly rate, commensurate with experience
Housing and travel assistance may be available and will be discussed during the offer process
