Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre is currently seeking artists + technicians of diverse disciplines to apply for Production positions with our company. Our production team will mount 3 productions during the season, with a compensation package tailored to their roles, including complimentary housing within easy walking distance of the theatre. SCENIC CHARGE ARTIST (SEEKING ONE)
Start/End Date: May 18th - July 5th, 2026 (negotiable)
Compensation: $600/wk

Reports To: Scenic Designer, Production Manager
Primary Responsibilities
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
-Work closely with Scenic Designer and the Creative teams for each production
-Responsible for all aspects of Scenic Painting
-Read and interpret renderings and elevations
-Create, test, and document paint treatments, samples, and techniques to ensure design accuracy and repeatability.
-Oversee all aspects of the paint shop, including workflow planning, materials management, safety procedures, and daily operations.
-Mix and maintain paint, coatings, and specialty materials, ensuring consistency across large scenic units.
-Paint in different styles, textures, woodgrains, 3D elements, etc
-Occasional foam sculpting, fabric dyes, and other specialty items
-Touch up scenery throughout contract and prepare for future touch ups in your absence
-Work independently but be able to instruct unskilled workers when they are available
-Ensure a safe, clean, and organized work environment in accordance with industry and company safety standards.
Required Skills and Experience:
-Previous experience as Scenic Charge Artist or Lead Scenic Painter.
-Solid command of color theory and a paint mixing necessary.
-Strong knowledge of scenic painting techniques, including faux finishes, aging and distressing, texture application, color mixing, and large-format layout.
-Extensive knowledge of priming and painting a wide range of materials. Wood, plastics, metal, etc.
-Ability to interpret designer renderings and translate artistic concepts into practical execution.
-Proficiency with standard scenic painting tools, sprayers, and materials.
-Strong artistic sensibility combined with practical problem-solving skills.
-Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management abilities.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
-Knowledge of workplace safety standards and best practices for handling paints, solvents, and specialized materials.
-Ability to lift, climb, and work on ladders or elevated surfaces as needed.
