The Naples Players (TNP), one of the nation+rsquo;s leading community-based theatres, is seeking a skilled and motivated Scenic Charge Artist to join our award-winning production team. Following a $22M renovation of our state-of-the-art facility in downtown Naples, TNP is expanding its technical and production staff to support an ambitious season of musicals, plays, and educational programming.
Position Summary
The Scenic Charge Artist is responsible for overseeing all scenic painting and surface treatment for TNP productions. This position ensures that scenic finishes are executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest artistic standards while accurately realizing scenic designers+rsquo; intent. The Scenic Charge Artist leads painting crews of staff, volunteers, and overhire artists and works closely with the Technical Director, Scenic Designers, and Production Department throughout the build and rehearsal process.
While scenic painting is the primary focus of this role, the Scenic Charge Artist is also expected to contribute basic scenic build and technical skills when needed, supporting the broader production team during high-volume periods, load-ins, and strikes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Scenic Painting + Finishes
-Execute all scenic painting, texturing, and surface treatments for productions.
-Translate scenic design renderings, elevations, and samples into finished scenic elements.
-Create and manage paint elevations, color mixes, textures, and samples as needed.
-Prepare, prime, and finish scenic surfaces including muslin, wood, metal, foam, and plastics.
-Oversee load-ins, notes, touch-ups, and strikes related to scenic finishes
2. Leadership + Supervision
-Lead scenic paint crews including staff, volunteers, apprentices, and overhire artists.
-Train and mentor volunteers and assistants in safe and effective scenic painting techniques.
-Plan and schedule paint calls to meet production deadlines.
-Ensure work is completed on time and within budget.
3. Collaboration
-Work closely with Scenic Designers to interpret and execute artistic intent.
-Coordinate with the Technical Director and carpentry team to align paint processes with build schedules.
-Communicate clearly with lighting, sound, props, and costumes departments.
-Problem-solve creatively when design adjustments or production changes arise.
4. Cross-Disciplinary + Technical Support
-Assist with basic scenic construction, modifications, and repairs as needed.
-Support load-ins, changeovers, and strikes alongside carpentry and technical teams.
-Operate standard shop and stage equipment safely, including lifts, ladders, and hand tools.
-Step in to support production needs during compressed schedules or peak activity periods.
5. Shop + Materials Management
-Maintain a safe, clean, and organized paint shop and work areas.
-Manage paint inventory, supplies, and materials; request purchases as needed.
-Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of paints and chemicals.
-Assist with maintaining scenic shop standards and backstage areas as assigned.
Qualifications
-3+ndash;5 years of scenic painting experience in a professional or academic theatre setting.
-Demonstrated leadership experience managing crews and volunteers.
-Strong scenic painting skills, including faux finishes, textures, aging, and color matching.
-Working knowledge of basic scenic construction and stagecraft practices.
-Ability to read and interpret scenic design drawings and paint elevations.
-Commitment to safety, collaboration, and production excellence.
-Physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs. and work at heights (ladders, lifts, grids).
-Experience with carpentry, prop finishing, or technical theatre is a plus.
