About the Production
Hell in a Handbag Productions seeks a Technical Director / Carpenter to lead the set build for The Real Housewives of The North Pole, a campy parody of the Real Housewives franchise. Now in our 23rd season, Hell in a Handbag is Chicago+rsquo;s leading theater company specializing in camp, parody, and ridiculousness through a queer lens.

Job Overview
The Technical Director will interpret the provided drafting plan and oversee the full set construction, installation, and strike. The design is a moderately scaled black box build+mdash;primarily platform-based+mdash;with existing materials to help reduce fabrication time.

We already have three 4x8 platforms with legs, which will serve as the base structure. The build will involve additional framing to round the front of the stage, facing the stage and a step down from the front lip. No walls or moving parts.

Estimated Hours
Approx. 30+ndash;40 hours total, including:

15+ndash;20 hours for construction and prep offsite

10 hours for load-in, adjustments, and finishing

5 to 8 hours for strike

Responsibilities
Review and execute from finalized drafting (.dwg linked here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HTjHe9zj-NqLx6ijQ3wWyQEJz-UH01SU/view?usp=sharing)

Source and/or cut additional lumber and hardware

Coordinate with the set designer for alignment on materials and finishes

Oversee set load-in and strike

Ensure structural safety and functionality within a small performance space

Qualifications

Experience as a Technical Director or Master Carpenter in small theatre settings

Ability to work independently within a fixed budget

Familiarity with black box theatre load-ins and efficient material use

Strong communication and time management skills

Compensation
Flat rate of $750, payable Nov 28th 2025.
