The Public Theater seeks an experienced and collaborative Head Scenic Artist to lead the Scenic Art team across its multi-theater complex. This role is responsible for supervising and executing all scenic paint treatments for all Public Theater performances, productions, and special events. The Head Scenic Artist ensures that all paint work aligns with the artistic vision of each production while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship, safety, and efficiency.
This position is covered under an IATSE collective bargaining agreement and requires membership or willingness to join USA Local 829.
Key Responsibilities:
+middot; Work with the Scenic Charge and Technical Director to lead the scenic team in the execution of all scenic painting for all productions at The Public Theater, including mainstage shows at 425 Lafayette St and The Delacorte Theater.
+middot; Collaborate with Scenic Charge to interpret scenic design renderings, paint elevations, and samples to produce high-quality scenic finishes.
+middot; Coordinate workflow and assign tasks to scenic artists to meet production deadlines and standards.
+middot; Collaborate with the Technical Director and Scenic Designers to plan and schedule paint work, estimate labor/material costs, and troubleshoot design or build challenges.
+middot; Maintain paint shop operations, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and efficient use of materials and resources.
+middot; Procure scenic art materials and maintain inventory in coordination with the Technical Director.
+middot; Ensure compliance with all safety procedures, regulations, and Public Theater safety protocols.
+middot; Participate in production meetings and technical rehearsals as required.
Qualifications:
+middot; Five years of proven experience as a Head Scenic Artist or Lead Scenic in a professional theatrical setting.
+middot; Strong portfolio demonstrating a wide range of scenic painting techniques (e.g., faux finishes, texture, lettering, aging/distressing, large-scale drops).
+middot; Excellent knowledge of scenic materials, tools, and safety practices.
+middot; Ability to manage budgets, timelines, and personnel effectively.
+middot; Exceptional communication and collaborative skills.
+middot; Familiarity with a fast-paced, multi-venue theater environment is preferred.
+middot; Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by the production schedule. Excellent organizational and communication skills.
+middot; Support special events, and other Public Theater programming as assigned.
+middot; Provide mentorship and guidance to assistants, overhire crews, and apprentices.

Working Conditions:
+middot; Work is primarily performed in scenic shops and on stage.
+middot; Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work at heights or on scaffolding.
+middot; Evening and weekend hours may be required based on production needs
This is a non-exempt position, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
