The Public Theater seeks an experienced and collaborative IATSE Head Hair and Make-up professional to oversee and execute all hair and make-up operations across our multi-theater complex. This position is responsible for managing and leading a team of hair and make-up artisans to support all Public Theater performances, productions, and special events. The Head Hair and Make-up will supervise, coordinate, and participate in the preparation and maintenance of all hair and make-up elements while ensuring the highest artistic and technical standards.

This position is covered under an IATSE collective bargaining agreement and requires membership or willingness to join IATSE Local 798.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead, manage, and schedule a team of IATSE hair and make-up artisans for all performances and related events across multiple theater spaces.
Collaborate with designers, Costume Director, costume team, and stage management to realize the artistic vision of each production+rsquo;s hair and make-up requirements.
Oversee and participate in the design execution, maintenance, and styling of wigs, facial hair, and hairpieces, as well as the application and upkeep of make-up and special effects as needed.
Run shows, including supervising and assisting with hair and make-up changes, quick changes, and touch-ups during performances.
Maintain and manage hair and make-up stock, tools, and supplies, including ordering materials and ensuring proper care and sanitation.
Create and maintain clear documentation, including run-of-show paperwork, wig and make-up plots, and maintenance notes.
Ensure compliance with all safety, sanitation, and hygiene protocols.
Qualifications:

Current IATSE membership in good standing.
Significant professional experience as a Head of Hair and Make-up or similar leadership role in theatrical production.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to manage a team in a fast-paced, multi-venue environment.
Expertise in wig construction, ventilation, cutting, coloring, styling, and maintenance.
Advanced knowledge of theatrical make-up application, including special effects, tattoos, prosthetics, and character make-up.
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by the production schedule. Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Support special events, and other Public Theater programming as assigned.
Provide mentorship and guidance to assistants, overhire crews, and apprentices.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily performed in theater spaces on and off stage.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in tight quarters.
Evening and weekend hours will be required based on production needs.


This is a non-exempt position, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
