The Public Theater seeks an experienced and collaborative IATSE Head Audio to join our production team. The Head Audio serves as the primary Production Audio for all Public Theater performances across our multi-theater complex. This position is responsible for overseeing and executing all audio elements of productions and events, ensuring the highest standards of sound quality and technical execution. The Head Audio will supervise all audio operations during load-ins, load-outs, changeovers, and technical/preview rehearsals, and will occasionally run shows as required.

This position is covered under an IATSE collective bargaining agreement and requires membership or willingness to join IATSE Local 1.



Key Responsibilities:

+middot; Lead and manage audio operations for all performances, rehearsals, and events in multiple venues within The Public Theater complex.

+middot; Serve as Production Audio, supporting designers, directors, and creative teams in realizing the audio vision for each production.

+middot; Oversee the load-in, setup, tuning, maintenance, and strike of all sound systems, including reinforcement, playback, communications, and assistive listening systems.

+middot; Operate mixing consoles as needed for performances and events.

+middot; Supervise and direct audio crew and overhire as assigned, ensuring safe and efficient work practices.

+middot; Collaborate closely with the Audio/Lighting Supervisor and other department heads to coordinate schedules, staffing, and technical needs.

+middot; Maintain and troubleshoot audio equipment, and ensure readiness of all systems across venues.

+middot; Ensure compliance with all safety standards, IATSE Local 1 work rules, and The Public Theater policies. Maintain a safe working environment and enforce safety protocols for all audio and rigging operations.

+middot; Assist with budget tracking, labor forecasting, payroll, and materials management related to audio operations.

+middot; Communicate clearly and effectively with stage management, designers, and all technical departments.

+middot; Collaborate with Music Manager and Department Heads on all backline set-up

+middot; Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the production schedule

+middot; Support special events, and other Public Theater programming as assigned.

+middot; Provide mentorship and guidance to assistance, overhire crews, and apprentices



Qualifications:

+middot; Must be a member in good standing of IATSE Local 1.

+middot; Minimum 5 years of professional experience in theatrical audio production, preferably in a multi-venue or repertory environment.

+middot; Proficiency in audio system setup, alignment, and operation, including digital consoles (e.g., DiGiCo, Yamaha, or equivalent).

+middot; Experience mixing musicals, plays, and special events.

+middot; Strong knowledge of wireless microphone systems, QLab, intercom systems, and networking for audio.

+middot; Flexible schedule with availability for nights, weekends, and holidays as required by production needs.

Working Conditions:

+middot; Work is primarily performed in theater spaces on and off stage.

+middot; Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work at heights or on scaffolding.

+middot; Evening and weekend hours may be required based on production needs.



This is a non-exempt position, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
