The Public Theater seeks a skilled and experienced IATSE Head Carpenter to join our production team. This role serves as the Production Carpenter for all Public Theater performances across our multi-theater complex, which includes multiple performance spaces with varying technical demands. The Head Carpenter will supervise all scenic operations during load-ins, load-outs, changeovers, and technical/preview rehearsals, and will occasionally run shows as required.

This position is covered under an IATSE collective bargaining agreement and requires membership or willingness to join IATSE Local 1.



Key Responsibilities:

+middot; Serve as Production Carpenter for all productions across the complex, ensuring scenic elements are installed, maintained, and operated safely and efficiently.

+middot; Supervise and lead all carpentry crews during load-ins, load-outs, changeovers, and technical rehearsals.

+middot; Coordinate scenic operations across multiple spaces to meet the needs of overlapping production schedules.

+middot; Collaborate closely with the Technical Director, Scenic Designers, and other production departments to ensure accurate implementation and execution of scenic designs.

+middot; Oversee and ensure the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all scenic elements during a production+rsquo;s run.

+middot; Occasionally serve on run crews, responsible for running shows and operating scenic elements during performances.

+middot; Maintain a safe working environment and enforce safety protocols for all scenic and rigging operations.

+middot; Assist with budget tracking, labor forecasting, payroll, and materials management related to scenic operations.

+middot; Communicate clearly and effectively with stage management, Assistant Technical Directors, and all technical departments.

+middot; Support special events, and other Public Theater programming as assigned.

+middot; Provide mentorship and guidance to assistance, overhire crews, and apprentices



Qualifications:

+middot; Must be a member in good standing of IATSE Local 1, or willing and able to join.

+middot; Minimum of 5 years professional experience as a carpenter or head carpenter in a theatrical environment; experience in multi-space venues is strongly preferred.

+middot; Advanced knowledge of scenic construction, stage machinery, automation, rigging practices, and theatrical safety standards.

+middot; Strong leadership and crew management skills, with the ability to mentor and motivate teams.

+middot; Ability to read and interpret scenic design drawings and technical plans.

+middot; Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

+middot; Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as production schedules require.

Working Conditions:

+middot; Work is primarily performed in theater spaces on and off stage.

+middot; Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work at heights or on scaffolding.

+middot; Evening and weekend hours may be required based on production needs.



This is a non-exempt position, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.
