Adelphi University is hiring an adjunct faculty to teach Lighting Design 1 this semester. The class meets weekly on Tuesdays from 2:00pm-5:00pm in person at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.
Potential to teach Lighting Design 2 course in the Spring semester as well.
Course Description:
This introductory level studio course examines theatrical lighting design from its history to the present-day. The course includes a thorough examination of theatrical lighting equipment, design paperwork, and standard theatrical practice toward the development of lighting designs for class projects. Mechanical Drafting is required.
Course Learning Goals:
0193-317: LIGHTING DESIGN I Students will:
1) demonstrate a basic understanding of the history and development of stage lighting
2) demonstrate an understanding of the color spectrum, the primary colors of light, and subtractive and additive color mixing of light
3) demonstrate the ability to list and define the controllable design characteristics of light
4) demonstrate knowledge of the various types of stage lighting fixtures and their specific uses and characteristics
5) demonstrate the ability to define and/or illustrate the laws of refraction and reflection and to specify how these laws are relevant to stage lighting
6) demonstrate the knowledge of stage terminology relevant to lighting the stage
7) demonstrate the knowledge of electrical terms and equipment pertaining to stage lighting
8) demonstrate knowledge of the basic parts of a theatrical dimming and control system
9) demonstrate the ability to use basic electrical formulas to determine the electrical capacity of a theatre or light plot and to plan a light plot or dimming system accordingly
10) demonstrate an understanding of the job requirements of a lighting designer and of his/her place in the theatrical hierarchy
11) demonstrate knowledge of the various types of organizational paperwork relevant to designing stage lighting
12) work on lighting projects both singly and in collaboration with other class members
13) begin to develop an understanding of the process associated with creating a stage lighting design and its relationship with other theatrical elements such as costumes, scenery, and music
14) begin to develop an understanding of the focusing and cuing process.
