The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre is looking for a skilled Resident Sound Designer to become part of its dynamic creative team. Reporting to the Artistic Director, this role is responsible for the design, artistic integrity, and execution of all sound for the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre and its productions. Working closely with the Resident Lighting Designer, the position also oversees the installation, upkeep, and operation of all sound and special effects equipment.
Essential Functions:
+bull; Designs sound and special effects in any combination for no less than 8 productions each season, which includes: attending all production meetings; providing paperwork +ndash; drafting, instrument schedules, cue synopses, cue sheets and other paperwork necessary to execute the assigned productions; actively oversees and participates in all load-ins, focus sessions, creating any sound cues, and attends all necessary technical rehearsals
+bull; Follows sound and special effects designs to install and operate show equipment
+bull; Ensures that all equipment is regularly maintained, is in good order, and ready for use
+bull; Responsible for obtaining all necessary rights for music and sounds
+bull; Supervises employee and volunteer crews to ensure that the equipment is properly installed and that users are trained in the safe operation of the equipment during the production run
+bull; Organizes and maintains an inventory of stage equipment
+bull; Responsible for ensuring the safety of others when installing equipment
+bull; Researches software updates, innovative technology and new equipment and recommends updates as required based on the research completed
+bull; Assists with maintaining performance spaces through troubleshooting, maintenance, cleaning and assisting with load-ins and strikes
+bull; Works with others in the lighting and sound departments to conduct department work
+bull; Problem solves technical issues related to production sound, electrical loads, space, and system capabilities
+bull; Mentors, supervises and ensures a quality educational experience for the Sound Design Intern through firsthand interaction with production design
+bull; Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills Requirements
+bull; Bachelor+rsquo;s degree in Theatre Design or Technical Theatre or equivalent relevant job experience, which provides essential knowledge and skills
+bull; Prior practical Sound Design experience necessary
+bull; Comprehensive knowledge of sound design and execution
+bull; Skills in both digital and analog systems is strongly preferred
o Experience with Dante networking, Yamaha QL5, Shure Wireless Microphones, QLab, Logic, OBS, and/or Vectorworks a plus
+bull; Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Email and calendar scheduling
+bull; Strong interpersonal and communication skills
+bull; Must possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
+bull; Must have familiarity working with both analog and digital audio consoles and systems
+bull; Understanding of audio system signal flow and operation
+bull; Familiarity with all relevant electrical codes
Physical Requirements
+bull; Willingness to adapt to a very flexible schedule
+bull; Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and bending as well as frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
+bull; Must possess the ability to climb a ladder, work in a lift, and work from a height of 55 feet
+bull; The physical ability to travel between the various CIVIC building locations is required
