Position Description:
Reporting to the Technical Director, the Education Technical Director leads the planning, drafting, construction, and installation of all scenic and prop elements for a City Springs Theatre Conservatory production. The Education Technical Director serves as both a technical leader and mentor, supervising pre-professional student crews during builds, load-ins, performances, and strikes, while maintaining a safe, educational, and collaborative work environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
Oversee the scenic build process for all Conservatory productions, in collaboration with the Technical Director and Scenic Designer.
Create technical construction drawings from designer drawings using industry-standard drafting software (e.g., Vectorworks).
Lead all load-ins and load-outs, supervising student crews in safe scenic transitions.
Serve as the primary technical mentor to pre-professional students, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and educational environment.
Ensure safe use of tools and equipment, and enforce shop safety protocols, including use of PPE and OSHA-compliant practices.
Coordinate with education faculty and production staff to align scenic builds with production calendars and instructional goals.
Maintain the scene shop, including tools, and materials; order necessary supplies in collaboration with the Technical Director.
Conduct routine crew check-ins during show runs, ensuring scenic integrity and addressing any repairs or adjustments as needed.
Ensure all scenic elements are constructed within budgetary and time constraints.
Assist in creating run crew assignments as needed.
Other duties as assigned by the Technical Director or Production Manager.
Job Requirements:
Extensive experience in scenic construction, including wood and metal fabrication techniques, for theatre, dance, opera, or live events.
Proficiency in technical drafting software (e.g., Vectorworks, AutoCAD).
Strong working knowledge of shop tools, scenic carpentry, and rigging safety.
Experience mentoring or teaching students or interns in a production environment.
Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
Competency with Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Calendar), and Zoom.
Ability to manage time effectively and lead a team through deadlines and production processes.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Ability to lift 50 lbs and work at heights when necessary.
