Position Overview
The Head Carpenter is responsible for assisting in the creation and building of all scenic elements. They are also expected to train volunteers and crew as needed, take a lead role in scenic construction, help coordinate shop scheduling, and fill in as show crew when necessary. The position is full-time. It requires flexible hours including some evenings, weekends and holidays. This position answers directly to the Technical Director. They also play a leadership role within the community and a supporting role in accommodating events at the Bangor Opera House, including rentals to external parties.


Responsibilities
Include but are not limited to the following:
Take a lead role in scenic construction
Work with TD on shop scheduling including load-ins, strikes, and general work schedules as well as troubleshoot scheduling conflicts
Train crew and volunteers as needed as well as oversee their work
Work with TD to break down and execute the scenic build process including printing and proofing scenic plans, and coordinating necessary resources
Assist in the hanging of soft goods and masking
Fill in for show crew when necessary
Work with TD and Production Manager to coordinate purchasing of materials and equipment as well as report immediate supply and material needs to TD
Maintain tool room/shop space and safety
Assist TD with production inventory database
Assist with special events as well as provide auxiliary support for DA programing as needed
Assist in Drafting when applicable
Ensure scene shop and all work areas are safe, clean, and maintained
Assist with general operation of counterweight fly system annual rigging maintenance plan
Attend all load-in/load-outs
Provide assistance when needed for technical set-ups on the property for special events
Assist with building maintenance and improvements as needed on all properties
Uphold DEI values in all interactions and continue to expand both personal and professional growth in these areas
Lead by example by complying with all company safety codes and requirements
Other duties as assigned


Qualifications and Skills
Candidates must have:
Good knowledge of power tools and basic theatrical construction
The ability to work independently
Facility in reading construction designs and plans
Fluency in the terminology of the trade
Skill, precision, and craftsmanship with hand and power tools
Attention to detail and the ability to view the project at scope.
Ability to multitask without compromising safety and quality
Strong problem-solving skills
Adept skills of organization and follow-through
Strong work ethic and a sense of urgency
Ability to communicate clearly when giving directions or interacting with staff, visiting artists, volunteers, students, and apprentices
Display understanding of construction safety.
Strength to move, lift, pull and push objects up to 100 pounds
Basic drafting
An understanding of and flexible/creative use of theatrical tech systems
Computer skills with proficiencies in Microsoft word, excel, and Google Drive
Willingness to learn programs such as ETCSystems and Qlab
Manual dexterity and coordination to operate construction equipment

Education and Experience (Preferred)
● Bachelor+rsquo;s degree; preferably in Technical Theatre or similar experience
● Experience working as scenic carpenter

Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range: $40,000/year
This position is a full-time, salaried position defined at $769/ week and 40 work hours per week. The position is eligible for overtime if weekly work is beyond 40 hours. The position will alert their supervisor when hours worked are likely to go beyond 40 hours. This position is eligible for employee benefit plans including health, with options for vision and dental add-on plans. The personnel policies of Penobscot Theatre Company will govern said apprentice position; please note that these policies alone do not establish a contract of employment with any employee.
