Summary:
Under close supervision of the Technical Director and Scene Shop Supervisor, the Carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, and striking scenic elements for all productions in Trinity Rep+rsquo;s season. For select productions, the Carpenter also serves as the Stage Carpenter during performances, collaborating with the Stage Management team to facilitate the needs of each show. This includes maintaining all scenic and technical elements, as well as operating scenic and automation effects during performances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Use power tools including table and crosscut saws
Work with wood, metal, plastics and other materials
Understand and interpret working drawings and models
Assist in researching and developing mechanical, electronic and pneumatic systems
Develop both standard and non-standard set pieces
Collect off-site materials
Facilitate problem solving with actors, crews, stage manager, and other theater staff
Repair the set during the run of the play as needed
Tear down the set for disposal, storage of reusable pieces, or some combination of both
Understanding rigging, scenic automation, and general scenic construction
Monitoring the condition of the scenery and technical elements and either performing the required maintenance and repairs or communicating larger repairs or issues to the TD
Ensuring a safe work and performance space for actors and crew
Touching up scenic paint as needed through the run of a show and informing the Charge Painter of more involved paint repair needs
Serving on the performance run crew
Occasional operation of automation effects and equipment
Qualifications:

Experience / Education:
Three or more years of professional carpentry employment or internship; interest and/or involvement in an arts-related enterprise; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Theater experience is a plus.
Technical Skills/Knowledge:
Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
General knowledge of tools, rigging and building
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Welding experience a plus
Knowledge of backstage equipment and activities during the run of a theatrical performance
Creativity is a positive in this role

Typical schedule is weekdays, additionally a couple months a season will include regular evening and weekend schedules as assigned for run crew/Stage Carpenter duties
