Position Overview:
The position of Lead Carpenter is a full-time position responsible for the construction of scenery and maintenance of the scene shop tools and equipment. A Lead Carpenter is expected to be able to supervise teams and teach skills and techniques to Carpenters. They also support the Shop Supervisor in communicating with the Paint Charge, TD and theater partners. They may lead carpenters in a load in, strike, or notes session on location. They will be expected to flag questions and issues for the shop supervisor and solve basic issues on their own. The Lead Carpenter reports to the Shop Supervisor

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with the Shop Supervisor in order to adhere to the build schedule, maintain labeling/organization systems, and manage space and staff.
Communicate with Shop Supervisor and Scenic Charge on delivery of scenery.
Develop a holistic understanding of each project in order to make decisions about quality of work, build process, and troubleshooting without the input of the shop supervisor.
Assist with creating and maintaining safe environments and practices, including following all OSHA/CA labor laws.
Supervise notes on-site independently, including communicating with designer/production management/other departments
Maintain documentation including organizing and labeling all units, materials, and drawings for each show or project
Create and label hardware/travel tool kits for location work
Assist in organizing and maintenance of workspaces and tools
Teach or train overhire, assistants and fellow carpenters on tools/processes

You are an ideal candidate if you:
Have advanced scenic skills in carpentry, metal fabrication, and rigging.
Are experienced working with a variety of materials.
Are comfortable reading and interpreting construction drawings, choosing construction methods, and maintaining quality standards of completed scenery.
Have unsupervised problem solving and decision making capacity.
Understand theater terminology and interdepartmental knowledge.
Can guide assistants, overhire and carpenters in skills and processes where appropriate.
Are proficient in the safe use of a wide range of power tools.
Have the ability to lift 50lbs (preferred).
Enjoy working in a creative, collaborative, fast-paced atmosphere and contribute to the creation of a positive work environment.
Share a respect for diverse backgrounds and voices and a commitment to inclusion and equity.
Have experience driving trailers and 24+rsquo; trucks (Current CA Driver+rsquo;s License)
Special Environmental Factors
The shop spaces are hot in the summer and require extended standing and walking on hard surfaces.
Work for Cal Scenic occasionally includes exposure to sunlight and hot weather for extended periods of time.
Variable schedule, requires evening and weekend hours during load-ins and technical rehearsals.
Some local travel is required between the scene shop in Concord and various theaters throughout the Bay Area.
