Position Overview:
The position of Carpenter is a full-time position responsible for the construction of scenery and maintenance of the scene shop tools and equipment. The Carpenter has a basic understanding of tools and materials. At the starting rate they will work with regular supervision and be developing the techniques and skills listed below. In the higher range the expectation is that a supervisor can explain a project/technique and the Carpenter can complete the task independently. The Carpenter may demonstrate to Overhire Carpenters or Shop Assistants basic institutional knowledge and/or use of tools/processes when safe/appropriate to do so. The Carpenter reports to the Shop Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain a clean and safe work environment including daily cleaning of tools, material storage, and work areas
Interpret drawings and building of scenic units
Handle materials, including transferring material, packing and handling scenery and hardware upkeep
Monitor Overhire and Shop Assistants on tool use and build process and communicate institutional knowledge and/or demonstrate tool use and build processes when safe/appropriate to do so
Participate in truck pack and scenery transport
Install and strike scenery at various venues
Maintain a quality of work that aligns with Cal Scenic+rsquo;s standards
At the highest range of the pay rate, Carpenters should be able to do more advanced scenic build techniques, be proficient in more complicated drawing interpretation, build unsupervised, efficiently solve problems, and troubleshoot tool issues.
You are an ideal candidate if you:
Are comfortable with basic tool and hardware use, including screws, nuts and bolts, staples, nails, hand tools, measuring and layout implements, drills and drivers, saws, pneumatic fasteners, presses, grinders, sanders, finishing tools, ladders, lifts, hand trucks/dollies/jacks, sewing machines, welders, trucks and trailers.
Understand appropriate PPE use.
Understand general shop safety practices.
Understand basic drafting, mathematics, and material identification.
Understand basic theatrical build techniques - including flats, platforms, steps, stair units, soft goods, etc.
Possess the ability to demonstrate safe and institutional practices to overhire carpenters and shop assistants.
Have the ability to lift 50lbs (preferred).
Have experience driving trailers and 24+rsquo; trucks (Current CA Driver+rsquo;s License)

Special Environmental Factors:
The shop spaces are hot in the summer and require extended standing and walking on hard surfaces.
Work for Cal Scenic occasionally includes exposure to sunlight and hot weather for extended periods of time.
Variable schedule, requires evening and weekend hours during load-ins and technical rehearsals.
Some local travel is required between the scene shop in Concord and various theaters throughout the Bay Area.
