Royal Design House is a premier custom gown and costume company based in New Orleans, specializing in creating exquisite designs for the Queens, Kings, and Courts of Carnival. We strive to blend beauty, fashion, and personality in every creation, offering our clients a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Position Overview:
This role utilizes your skills in pattern layout and cutting, machine, hand sewing and hand beading on one-of-a-kind costumes. As a valued member of our team, you will collaborate with Drapers, the Costume Shop Manager and Designer to bring our clients' visions to life.
Compensation:
Competitive pay: $18-$24 per hour, with overtime paid at time and a half
Standard work hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
Flexibility for weekend and evening work closer to Mardi Gras, based on production schedule
Occasional evening assistance at events during the Carnival season may be required
Responsibilities:
Execute standard stitching techniques on custom costumes under the guidance of the Shop Manager or Designer
Prep, layout, and cut fabric using custom patterns under the direction of the Draper
Apply trims to costumes using appropriate techniques
Perform alterations as necessary to achieve perfect fits
Support backstage at Carnival season events, offering customer service and wardrobe assistance as needed.
Safeguard the artistic vision of the Designer in all costume work
Maintain timely communication with the Costume Shop Manager on project progress
Ensure efficient use of resources and space, staying updated with Workforce
Skills/Qualifications:
Proficient in machine sewing and hand finishing skills
Experience Prepping, laying out, and cutting fabric for precise pattern matching and minimal waste
Experience with industrial machinery and common construction methods
Interest in craftwork and an eagerness to learn new techniques
Familiarity with sewing machines, sergers, and ironing equipment
Ability to handle pressure and meet strict deadlines while maintaining attention to detail
Previous professional garment/costume construction experience of 3+ years; professional experience of 5+ years preferred
General Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment
Calm and composed demeanor in fast-paced or unexpected situations
Excellent memory for details and willingness to learn new skills
Sense of humor and positive attitude towards tasks
