Northern Stage, a LORT D 240 seat regional theater in White River Junction, VT, seeks an experienced Scenic Artist/Carpenter to join the full-time staff. Northern Stage produces a mainstage season, an education season, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. This position reports directly to the Technical Director and works closely with the Props Manager and other production department heads to help execute all elements of scenic fabrication and paint treatment.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
~ Build scenery according to technical drawings as directed by the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director.
~ Complete any scenic notes as necessary during the run of a show.
~ Keep the Scene Shop and associated work areas clean and safe. Maintain tools and equipment as necessary for the Scene Shop.
~ Assist with changeover between productions, primarily focused on scenery, but helping additional departments as necessary.
~ Serve as a Deck Carpenter on run crews of shows as needed based on the scale of production.
~ Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons.
~ Support other production departments as needed.
Qualifications:
~ One year of experience in professional shops. A combination of education and professional experience will be considered.
~ Knowledge of theatrical scenic building techniques.
~ Ability to read construction drawings and paint elevations. Experience with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks a plus.
~ Proficiency in Microsoft Office + Google Suite.
~ Excellent communication and organization skills. Experience managing and adhering to budgets.
~ Working knowledge of theatrical safety conventions, OSHA regulations, rigging, and fire codes.
~ Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to approach challenges collaboratively.
~ Proficiency with hand and power tools.
~ Rigging, welding, and steel fabrication experience a plus.
~ Valid driver+rsquo;s license and ability to drive a box truck.
~ Comfortable working at heights in excess of 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
~ Ability to safely lift 75 lbs.
~ BA or BFA in technical theater a plus.
Job Type: Full time, with some nights and weekends required
Contract Dates: ASAP through 6/5/2026, with possibility of renewal
Compensation: $44,000 annually. Paid bi-weekly (overtime exempt)
