The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University is welcoming applications for the position of Sound Department Head. CATF, a LORT D summer festival and leading producer of contemporary plays, is dedicated to telling diverse stories and developing new American theater. The festival premieres or produces multiple plays per season in 3-4 venues. We are committed to supporting the unique needs of new work while fostering an environment of fun and company community. Located an hour from DC, CATF makes its home in one of America's coolest small towns, Shepherdstown, WV.

The Sound Department Head will oversee a department of a Assistant department head and four sound interns/board ops who will work as a team to execute the sound designs for the season's productions. The Sound Department head will collaborate with the festival's three sound designers (1 per venue) to realize their design concepts (incorporating a mixture of playback and live sources) in both fixed installation and reconfigurable theaters. The festival's dedication to incubating new work can mean script and design adjustments throughout the build and tech process. CATF values those who are able to collaborate toward practical and artistically-sound solutions in a time-sensitive environment. Flexibility and positivity are key.

Applicants should be experienced in show setup needs for fixed installation theaters (including system tuning and speaker maintenance) as well as flexible spaces with temporary sound systems and should be comfortable with basic theatrical/speaker rigging and working at heights over 20' (in lifts, ladders, and catwalks). Experience with Qlab, Dante, and digital consoles is required. Experience with Yamaha digital consoles, BSS Soundweb London processing and/or other room processors are preferred (but training can be provided)

Position is seasonal, from late May to mid July. All staff and interns are provided free air-conditioned housing within walking distance of the theaters and workspaces (also air conditioned,) 1-2 meals per day during tech, and free use of university gym, pool, and laundry facilities.
