Position Summary
Barter Theatre seeks an Assistant Technical Director to be a part of our 2025 season. The Assistant
Technical Director+rsquo;s primary responsibilities are to work in conjunction with the Technical Director to
develop methods for the accurate construction of scenery. The ATD will work to ensure efficient,
accurate, and safe scenic production practices are utilized and implemented. The ATD shall be responsible
for creating working drawings and will be required to assist with show builds in the shop whenever
possible.
Responsibilities
● Responsible for the safety of shop staff
● Supervise shop staff (Shop Foreman, Master Carpenter, and Carpenters)
● Responsible for fabricating sets correctly and efficiently
● Supervise and train shop employees as necessary
● Attend all strikes and load-in work calls
● Attend tech rehearsals as necessary
● Job may require heavy lifting, ladder and grid work, and long hours
● Facilitate the purchasing of shop supplies and tool repairs
● Knowledge of all aspects of carpentry (framing, trim, etc.)
● The ability to retain up to date knowledge of materials needed for shop efficiency
● The ability to work independently
● A self-motivator with the ability to motivate others
● The ability and willingness to complete a project correctly, efficiently, and in a timely
● manner, and to guide others to do the same
● The willingness to report safety and staff issues to the Technical Director
● Familiar with repertory theatre
● Experience in Welding (MIG) and metal fabrication
● Experience in Rigging Scenery and Automation
● Proficient in AutoCad
● Familiar with Fusion 360 and CNC milling is a plus
● Other duties as assigned
Qualification + Experience
● BA or BFA with an emphasis in Technical Production AND/OR a minimum of 2 years experience
in scenic construction and shop management in a professional performing arts environment.
