ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION Kansas City Repertory Theatre, led by Artistic Director Stuart Carden is a 60-year-old regional theater and the professional theatre in residence on the UMKC campus. The company produces a subscription season of four shows, plus annual special presentations like A Christmas Carol and a community tour in the spring. Our main performance spaces are Spencer Theatre, a 550-seat thrust stage, and Copaken Stage, a 319-seat LORT D space in downtown KC. JOB OVERVIEW The Properties Artisan must have well developed technical skills and be knowledgeable about materials and techniques. This person must also have experience with manipulating materials and objects to process requests from the director / designers. The Properties Artisan will build and create props as assigned by the Properties Director. This person must be able to work collaboratively and independently. Typically, KCRep produces musicals, new works, and classics. The props department consists of three people and is exceptionally collaborative, thoughtful, and passionate about theatre and the field of props.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES +bull; Participate in props or scenic transfers to/from warehouses, theatres, and rehearsal halls as needed +bull; Create props using assorted techniques to produce functional, durable, usable props +bull; Inform Assistant Properties Director of shop material needs in a timely fashion +bull; Touch up, repair, and maintain production props +bull; Build or source stock items and mock-ups for rehearsal, as needed +bull; Refurbish and replace props from storage, as directed by the Properties Director +bull; Interpret and build from drawings or images provided by Properties Director +bull; Use knowledge of period styles to develop accurate props and set dressing +bull; Maintain and organize props storage areas +bull; Understand and abide by all of Kansas City Repertory Theatre+rsquo;s policies and procedures. +bull; Support and uplift KCRep+rsquo;s mission, vision, and values. QUALIFICATIONS +bull; Working knowledge of soft good construction, including furniture upholstery, hand and machine stitching, leather work, fabric dying and aging, and draping techniques +bull; Ability to interpret and build from sketches, photos, video, or other media +bull; Painting and finishing: faux effects, furniture finishes, water and solvent based stains, color matching and color mixing +bull; Crafts: mixed media, foam, plastics, paper, ephemera, and needle crafts +bull; Carving: tools and materials, flat patterning, additive and subtractive, and knowledge of various materials including clay, plaster, plastic, foam, wood, metal, and casting +bull; Casting: knowledge of materials and methods, silicone, latex, and plaster products, alginate, and breakaway products +bull; Working knowledge of period styles +bull; Ability to repair furniture and electronics +bull; Basic understanding of small electronics and wiring +bull; Willingness to work in a safe, efficient, and organized manner +bull; Experience with creative problem solving in a group setting +bull; Previous experience with fine woodworking and metal fabrication +bull; Familiarity with Photoshop or other applicable software for the creation of paper goods (books, newspapers, graphics, and artwork) +bull; Working knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety equipment, products, and practices +bull; Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment +bull; Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and other theatre-related software
