SOUND DESIGNER - axes, herbs and satchels

The Anthropologists is seeking a Sound Designer for the world premiere of our original play, axes, herbs and satchels, which will premiere in Winter/Spring 2025. We are seeking a creative, technically skilled, and joyful collaborator who is passionate about investigative, research-based, devised theater. The ideal designer will be able to craft evocative scores and soundscapes that enhance the play's shifting time periods and settings. We are looking for someone who values collaboration and is willing to be an active participant in the rehearsal process to create an environmentally immersive sound design, drawing heavily from our research materials and the input of the artists involved. You+rsquo;ll be joining a women-led team of committed theater artists in a BIPOC-centered creative space.

COMPENSATION:
This position has a fee of $1,000. Payment will be made on a 1099; paid in regular installments via ACH.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Create original sound design for production in collaboration with co-directors, devising ensemble and design team, following careful reading of script and background research.
- Be present at and participate in rehearsals including designer run-thrus.
- Create and edit all sound effects and music necessary for the production
- Program QLab with all sound effects.
- Provide the stage manager with clearly marked cue script or cue sheet.
- Participate in regular production meetings with the design and production team.
- Attend all technical and dress rehearsals to program cues and make notes.
- Work with Stage Manager to ensure integrity of sound for touring to multiple venues.
- Be available for questions from technical staff members during build and tech period and between the two touring engagements.
- Be a partner in maintaining our anti-oppressive and anti-racist working values; adhering to the company+rsquo;s Code of Conduct and Community Agreements.
- Other duties as assigned by the Producing Artistic Director.

Qualifications and Experience
- At least 2-3 years of sound design experience.
- Proficient in QLab.
- Familiarity with sound board and basic sound equipment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to maintain poise and control under pressure.
- Experience working in a dynamic and highly collaborative environment.
- Experience with new and/or devised theatre is highly encouraged.

DURATION
Start Date: November, tbd - some pre-production meetings are likely in November/December.
End Date: March 13 (includes post-tour debrief).

Tentative rehearsal schedule: Rehearsals will span mid-January to mid-February, exact schedule TBD (Evenings and weekends with some weekdays). In-person rehearsals will be in Manhattan and/or Brooklyn.

ABOUT axes, herbs and satchels
Rooted in the history and embodied wisdom of doulas and midwives, axes, herbs and satchels is a celebration of traditional knowledge held in the Black birth worker community and a potent examination of maternal mortality. The play is devised from an array of research materials; first hand accounts, medical textbooks, ethnological research, and primary sources documenting grand midwives and the history of midwifery. This production features a cast of 6 Black/BIPOC performers and runs approximately 85 minutes.

CREATIVE + PRODUCING TEAM: Co-Directed + Co-Written by Sandie Luna and Melissa Moschitto. Devised by The Anthropologists. Featuring performances by: Jalissa Fulton, Brianna Johnson, Asha John and others tbd. Tour Manager: Jayda Jones.
