The Gateway Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County is seeking an ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR or HEAD CARPENTER for its 2024/25 Season. The Gateway is a professional non-profit theater located roughly 55 miles east of New York City on Long Island in Bellport, NY. A typical Gateway work week is 5 days. There are a few exceptions that are 6 days a week, Mainstage opening weeks, Haunt opening week, with additional compensation. Salary is negotiable, and on-site housing is provided. Gateway will also assist with transportation to and from its location in New York.

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist TD in overseeing all activities and safety of the Scenic Department
- Assist in maintaining a safe, secure, clean + organized office, shop, work, and storage spaces
- Running crews or Carpenters, Apprentices, and overhire technicians
- Loading in and changing over technical elements for each production
- Constructing scenery on an as needed basis
- Constructing/refurbishing sets that have been rented for a production
- Subbing in on run crew on occasion
- Loading, unloading, and cross loading of scenic trailers
Qualifications:
- Ability to run a crew, working on multiple projects at one time
- Must have good communication skills
- Knowledge of Theatrical building techniques
- Ability to read scenic drawing and build plans
- Capacity to solve problems
- Maturity and understanding of the artistic process
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail
- Rigging/Flying a plus
- Metal Working and Welding skills a plus
- Ability to safely lift 60+ pounds
- Driver's license a plus
Carpentry Department will occasionally help in other areas of production on an as needed basis, due to the fact that it is the largest technical department at The Gateway. Staff positions in all departments will be expected to work alongside Apprentices and to promote a healthy and safe work/learning environment.
