Teachers at Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School (PVPA) provide students in grades 7-12 with a supportive and challenging environment that is responsive to multiple learning styles, emphasizes learning through the arts, and integrates critical and creative thinking throughout the curriculum. Since 1996, PVPA has prepared students for higher education by employing a rigorous, standards-based curriculum in a nurturing and collaborative environment.
PVPA has an opportunity for a dynamic theatrical lighting and sound teacher for the 2025-2026 school year. We are looking for an artist with a strong personal practice, to share their passion with students from 7th to 12th grade. The Technical Design and Production curriculum is focused on building a strong understanding of historical evolution, technical skills, and technology used in the development of live and recorded entertainment. This educator will work with 7th - 12th grade students who will be assessed through a variety of methods using a standards based grading systems with the goal of supporting and challenging each student. Under the direction of the Director of Arts, you will be responsible for:
1. Teaching a number of classes that include Light Design, Sound Design + Engineering, Script Analysis for Technical Theater and Stage Management Basics.
2. Developing curricula and instructional materials based on set departmental learning objectives.
3. Assessing student work and providing timely feedback to students and parents via PowerSchool online grading system
4. Working with theater manager, costume designer, and set designer to create and support student technical teams for PVPA mainstage productions and outreach performances (when applicable)
5. Providing technical guidance/consultation on systems replacement plans for theater lighting and sound equipment
6. Applying PVPA+rsquo;s grading system to report on student course progress and achievement
7. Coordinating with special educators to address the diverse needs of all learners
8. Attending and participating in regular faculty meetings and school-wide professional development activities
9. Attending and participating in meetings with students and/or parents/guardians as scheduled, including parent teacher conferences
10. Participating in school-wide events that occur during the school day
11. Assisting with other faculty administrative duties as required.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor+rsquo;s degree (required) Master+rsquo;s degree (preferred).
2. DESE license in Vocational Technical Education (preferred) or able to pass the Communication + Literacy and Theater MTEL exam within 1 year (required).
3. Strong experience with ETC lighting systems, and digital/analogue sound systems to include functional knowledge of Qlab, Izadora, and/or Behringer X-Air digital mixing/cueing system
4. Two to Five years of classroom teaching experience in grades 7-12 (preferred)
5. Three or more years of experience working in a professional or community theater technical team (light designer/board operator, sound engineer, stage manager etc.)(preferred).
6. Tool knowledge, electrical wiring knowledge, and safety practices used in theatrical lighting and sound engineering practices (preferred).
7. Knowledge of +ldquo;National Standards for the Visual Arts+rdquo; standards (preferred)
8. CORI/SORI and Fingerprint background check
9. Computer literacy
Other Information/Instructions:
Salary Range: Full time $43,268 to $68,719 annually dependent upon degree and experience. Additional $1,000 stipend for individuals who hold a DESE license in subject area and potential for bonus at the end of the fiscal year as outlined in the collectively bargained agreement.
2025-2026 school year consists of 180 school days plus 5 professional development/curriculum work days and a thirty-five hour work week that includes, on average, three class blocks per day of collaborative/independent work time.
