Summary of Position:
The Costume Shop Assistant/Laundry Crew member is responsible for completing twice weekly laundry for both our mainstage productions and our childrens theatre productions. In addition to laundry duties, the role functions as an assistant to the other costume shop employees, especially to the costume designer and costume shop manager. The team member may be required to act as a stitcher in the costume shop or in another costume-related field as determined by the manager. This is a part-time position, with two guaranteed work days per week and the opportunity for more hours.
Duties and Responsibilities:
-Complete laundry and redistribute to the dressing rooms by 4:30pm on Mondays and Fridays.
-Distribute dry cleaning to the dressing rooms by 4:30pm on Tuesdays.
-Check the costume repair sheet upon clocking in, and complete any needed repairs before the next show.
-Assist with costume load-in, changeover, and dressing as assigned.
-Maintain costumes throughout the duration of the show run, by carefully assessing laundry needs, and performing proactive assessments of each garment prior to wash.
-Maintain clean and safe workspace, both in the costume shop and laundry room.
-Perform emergency costume repairs as necessary, or contact the shop manager if the repair requires further direction.
-Attend fittings as needed.
-Perform the duties of a stitcher as requested, during the lead-up to opening a new show.
-Organize the costume storage space, both of garments and supplies, as requested by shop manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
-High School diploma or equivalent
-2 years working experience in clothing, laundry, wardrobe and costuming preferred
-Strong interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills.
-Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when working backstage with performers
-Experience with:
- Laundry supplies and equipment
- Fabric cleaning techniques and stain removal
- Costume shop equipment
- Hand-sewing
- Machine sewing
- Shoe repair equipment
-Valid Drivers License
Physical Requirements:
-Ability to lift, push, pull or otherwise maneuver up to 50 lbs repeatedly, either alone or with assistance
-Ability to lift and carry costumes while navigating stairs.
-Work in confined spaces with low visibility.
-Stand for long periods of time.
-Perform the following physical activities: kneeling, squatting, bend floor-to waist/waist-to-overhead, reach overhead, simple grasp and fine hand manipulation
-Able to work indoors and outdoors, in varying weather
-Position may be exposed to fumes, dust, odors, and cold/heat temperature extremes
-Perform cleaning duties, including use of cleaning chemicals
-Work a flexible schedule/hour based on business need, potentially at night.
