Statement of Job
Under the direction of the Lead Prop Runner and Props Supervisor the Props Crew serves as a key member of La Jolla Playhouse+rsquo;s Production Staff. This position is expected to function in a fast-paced and detail-critical environment, participating in and facilitating prop activities onstage including load in, tech, the run of a show, and strike + transfer. The Props Crew must work closely with stage management, performers, and other departments backstage to ensure the safe and successful presentation of all performances to which they are assigned. Key to this success is a focus on active communication, organization, and an ability to remain calm under pressure. The strongest candidate is a technician and artist, committed to the artistic vision and mission of La Jolla Playhouse.
Essential Job Duties
- In conference with the Lead Props Runner, Props Supervisor and Stage Management, coordinate, execute and maintain the prop design and requirements of the production in a safe and efficient manner, including incoming productions and co-productions.
- Practice proper backstage etiquette and professional demeanor with technicians, performers, designers, and others involved with the production.
- As the production requires, repair and maintain props and consumables for the production.
- Communicate to the Lead Props Runner problems or notes at the appropriate time.
- Ensure appropriate and safe handling of props by the cast and crew in the course of the run of the Play.
- Function in a professional and collegial manner when collaborating with all theatre personnel, professional creative teams, staff, management and other visiting artists.
- Enhance and support the educational and institutional mission of La Jolla Playhouse.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Proficiencies
- 2 plus years of professional experience running shows as props crew (LORT Experience Preferred).
- Works well under pressure and time constraints, maintaining a calm demeanor in the face of new and unexpected challenges.
- Possess a complete understanding of backstage etiquette, including basic knowledge of other department+rsquo;s requirements and responsibilities.
- Verbal communication skills required, written communication skills a plus.
- Demonstrated skills and detailed knowledge of props artisan skills such as fine wood working, cabinetry, scenic painting, hand and industrial machine stitching, soft good construction and upholstery, mold making and casting; floral arranging; paper goods graphics and construction; intermediate fine carpentry woodworking; furniture construction, MIG welding; scenic carpentry.
- Requires extended periods of physical activity, including long periods of standing, moving quickly, navigating tight quarters. Typical tech schedules vary, long hours are common.
- Knowledge of and dedication to safe working practices and OSHA 10 a plus.
- Possess strong critical thinking, attention to detail, problem solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work under time constraints, maintaining a productive attitude.
- Ability to climb and work on ladders, lifts, catwalks, and grids.
- Ability to regularly lift 50lbs or more.
- Valid Driver+rsquo;s License and reliable transportation.
- Frequently ascends/descends and moves about on ladders.
- Ability to work extended hours
- Frequently moves items weighing up to 50lbs and maneuvers heavy items with assistance.
Work Environment:
- Environment varies from dark/quiet backstage to bright/loud on stage, also shop.
