Bristol Riverside Theatre is a mid-sized regional theatre whose mission is to engage audiences and artists alike with exceptional performances, inspired writing, and superior productions that motivate us to think harder, to feel more deeply, to laugh more joyfully, and to reflect on ourselves and the world in which we live. Located in the historic district of Bristol Borough, the theatre has a full-time staff of 12 employees. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds and perspectives and reflects our community. We offer over 200 performances per year including 5 mainstage theatre productions, 3-8 presented theatre productions, and 4-8 concerts. BRT operates under a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 8, representing the stagehands employed at the theatre.
Position Overview:
Bristol Riverside Theatre is looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Head Carpenter to safely and effectively lead carpentry calls for theatrical productions and events, from pre-production preparation through strike. The Head Carpenter works closely with outside fabrication shops, ensuring that work adheres to production timelines and design specifications. Head Carpenter is responsible for adjustments during technical rehearsals and show runs. This position also manages and leads a crew of IATSE Local 8 carpenters, providing direction, ensuring tasks are performed efficiently and to high-quality standards, and prioritizing safety above all else. This position demands strong leadership and communication skills to effectively coordinate with various teams, including production managers, designers, and shop personnel.
The Head Carpenter reports directly to the Production Manager. Collaboration with the Production Manager is crucial to maintain a smooth workflow and ensure that all elements are delivered safely and on time.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Head Carpenters duties include, but are not limited to:
Ensuring carpentry work meets quality, specifications, and safety standards.
Leading carpentry crews.
Communicating with fabrication shops to learn construction details for successful installation
Ensuring job site safety, protecting and maintaining company tools, and enforcing jobsite rules.
Working with the Production Manager to ensure appropriate production calendars and crew calls for smooth operations, and on-time/on-budget delivery.
Qualifications:
Proven experience in carpentry within a theatrical or technical environment.
Ability to read and interpret construction and installation documentation.
Masterful understanding and execution of theatrical rigging.
Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
A passion for theatre and a commitment to collaboration and innovation.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand or walk for over 75% of the time and lift up to 75 lbs.
Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl as needed.
Schedule:
This part-time position requires flexibility, with hours varying based on production needs. Expect up to 40+ hours during peak times, with schedules planned in advance.
Benefits: 12% contribution to the IATSE National Benefits Fund. Overtime pay after 8 hours daily and 40 hours weekly, as well as on pre-determined holidays.
