The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) is primarily concerned with the operational aspects of production and is responsible for the technical preparation and execution of CoPA supported events with knowledge and experience in various carpentry, lighting, sound, video (capture and streaming), properties, crafting, rigging, and other technical theatre practices. They assist in leading and supervising the load-in, operation, maintenance, and strike of production elements. Under the direction of the Technical Director, the ATD also supports production preparation as required: reviewing and translating designs and plans for staff and crews to implement under their guidance and collaborating closely with designers and faculty to ensure seamless integration of creative and educational objectives. The ATD makes regular recommendations on staffing and budget needs within CoPA Production Management.
The ATD is also responsible for evaluating, planning, scheduling, performing, and or directing the housekeeping, repair, and service of CoPA Production Management performance venues and equipment.
The ATD will collaborate closely with the Technical Director to regularly schedule and update the day-to-day production calendar and will coordinate with coworkers and student employees to ensure smooth scheduling and operational efficiency. In addition, they must regularly mentor and supervise students.
The ATD is expected to perform with a high degree of professional initiative, judgment, and discretion with a focus on safety. They will also be asked to perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Technical Direction:
Collaborate with the CoPA Production Management team to ensure that CoPA performance venues are ready for use.
Meet deadlines, provide technical expertise, manage resources, and recommend staffing needs.
Participate in the review and translation of designs in all production disciplines through verbal and written means, as assigned.
Assist and occasionally lead CoPA production load-ins, running crews, and strikes, as assigned.
Participate in the training of running crews for all CoPA productions +ndash; stagehands, board ops, and specialty positions +ndash; creating tracking sheets as needed.
Act as the Technical Director+rsquo;s representative in their absence or during times of overlapping production schedules, as needed and assigned.
Provide guidance and technical expertise to student employees and crews, as well as faculty and staff, as assigned.
Along with Production Management team, utilize proper safety practices and procedures, including maintaining safety protocols and inspection records for production facilities and equipment.
Travel to different locations for Production Management work and drive company vehicles when required.
Supervise Production Management activity in the Waltmar and Halsell Theatres, Salmon Recital Hall, Sandi Simon Center for Dance, Musco Center for the Arts and other CoPA venues, as assigned and in the absence of the Technical Director.
Collaborate with Production Management staff as needed.
Collaborate closely with designers and faculty to ensure seamless integration of creative and educational objectives.
Attend production meetings and technical/dress rehearsals, as needed. Record meeting minutes, as assigned
Step in to cover key roles and responsibilities in the absence of other team members to ensure uninterrupted workflow and project continuity. This may include working late nights and evenings.

Equipment and Props Management:
Assist in the maintenance and inventory of technical equipment, including lighting fixtures, sound equipment, projectors, video, and carpentry and crafting tools. Assist in coordinating the maintenance and service of company vehicles and lifts.
Coordinate equipment rentals and purchases, staying abreast of industry trends and advancements.
Manage the organization and maintenance of the props storage area, ensuring the availability and proper use of props during rehearsals and performances.
Collaborate with the on-campus Fire Marshal and maintain the CoPA Weapons and Fight Procedure policy. Act as the Production Management representative when this policy is in effect on productions.

Communication, Organization, and Scheduling:
Work closely with faculty, students, and production teams to understand and fulfill technical requirements for performances.
Collaborate with department heads to ensure cohesive and efficient technical support across disciplines.
Communicate effectively with designers, directors, and other production collaborators to ensure a cohesive and successful production process.
Assist in maintaining the production calendars and online organizational tools used by Production Management
Maintain and organize digital assets for productions, including backups of media, and building organization for new projects.
Facilitate the transfer of media after shoots as dictated by the Technical Director or Production Manager
Remain current in streaming trends and technology necessary to keep CoPA productions relevant, accessible, and high quality.

Supervision and Training:
Assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of technical crews, including students, and part-time staff.
Provide guidance and support to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.

Safety and Compliance:
Enforce and adhere to safety protocols and regulations in all technical aspects of productions as provided by the Technical Director and Production Manager and in compliance with current local and national regulations.
Stay informed about industry standards and ensure compliance with relevant codes and regulations.
Communicate with other on-campus entities about current University policies relating to safety and compliance and often act as Production Management+rsquo;s representative with these entities.

Carpentry, Lighting, Sound, and Video:
Assist with set construction and carpentry work as needed.
Ensure that scenic elements are constructed and installed safely and efficiently.
Assist in the load-in, operations, and strike of lighting, sound, and video elements as needed.

Budget Management:
Assist in budget planning and management for technical aspects of productions, including equipment, materials, and personnel..
Required Qualifications
Five or more (5+) years of experience in general stagecraft techniques and experience in stage carpentry, properties construction, scenic painting, audio systems, lighting systems, video, and/or projection systems.
Experience in maintaining production equipment and inventory and overseeing technical staff in inventory practices. Abilities in record keeping, cleaning and maintaining production equipment.
One to three years (1-3) experience as a stage technician, lighting, audio, or video engineer, and/or stage manager.
Broad knowledge of theatrical design across the various disciplines.
Experience with equipment and facilities for professional, educational, and performing arts productions.
Proficiency in stage lighting/audio/visual equipment/electricity/console programming and operations,
Knowledge of basic principles and methods of stage management.
Demonstrated knowledge of standard theatrical equipment and terminology. Demonstrated knowledge of the methods and techniques in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment used in stage productions.
Demonstrated experience leading and directing stage crews.
Ability to read and interpret ground plans, elevations, CAD drawings, and lighting plots.
Ability to prioritize tasks when faced with interruptions, distractions, and fluctuating workloads, and to carry out duties in a reliable and timely manner.
Strong analytical and organizational skills to prioritize schedules, projects, and resources in a complex, multi-venue environment.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of pertinent regulations and codes relating to theater productions.
Proficiency in scenic load-in/operation/strike
Experience in Stage Carpentry, theatrical lighting, audio, projection, properties, and paint
Proficiency in rigging, and counterweight systems.
Familiarity in setting up sound and lighting for video purposes
Familiarity with equipment and systems associated with the recording and live streaming of performing arts content.+bull; Experience setting up web-based recorded and live productions including using production switchers, IP network gear, routers, and graphics.
Basic camera-operating skills.
Experience with rigging and counterweight fly systems
Experience working as a scenic carpenter.
