Job Title: Props Artisan/Crew Member
Reports to: Director of Production
Works Closely with: Props Coordinator, Head of Props Department, Technical Director and Stage Management
About Sarasota Opera
Sarasota Opera, which owns its 1926 historic theater that was renovated in 2008, produces a winter festival season with four operas in repertory from January to March, and a fall season of varying size. Additionally, throughout the opera season, Sarasota Opera offers special events and concerts.
Position Summary
The Props Artisan is a seasonal stagehand and part of the IA props crew. Additional work with IATSE Local 412 is available outside of the Opera season. We perform in +ldquo;rep+rdquo; style so night and weekend work should be expected.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
▪Build and maintain props for all Sarasota Opera productions
▪Load-in and change-over of prop elements for each production
▪Keeping the prop shop and work areas clean and promoting a safe working environment
▪Being a part of the props run crew as needed for productions
▪Assist in fulfilling all rehearsal props needs, and the transfer of all props between rehearsals spaces and stage
Position Requirements
The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge and skills:
▪A minimum of two years as a props artisan or professional stagehand
▪Prop carpentry and painting skills
▪Ability to sew and work with fabrics
▪The able to work at heights, and lift a minimum of 70 pounds
▪Excellent organization and communication skills
▪Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment
▪The ability to balance competing priorities while maintaining a positive attitude and sense of humor
Dates and Pay
▪Specific dates will vary but generally early October to mid-November for the Fall and mid-January through late March should be expected.
▪All Stagehands are currently required to join the IATSE Local 412 referral list and are subject to a collective bargaining agreement including work rules, pay scale and benefits. Housing and transportation are not provided.
