Position Summary
The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre is seeking a skilled Properties Master to join its production team. A successful candidate will have excellent props crafting and construction skills, as well as the ability to work independently and possess a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
Essential Functions:
+bull; In collaboration with the Scenic Designer and Technical Director, the Resident Properties Master is responsible for the realization of all properties, furniture and set dressing required for all Civic productions and special events. This includes the following responsibilities:
+bull; Locate, secure, transport and care for all production properties, including hand props and set dressings
+bull; Research, and procure either by purchasing, renting, borrowing or creating and fabricating prop items and set dressings, including, but not limited to, upholstering, sewing, woodworking, molding, welding
+bull; Supervise, mentor, instruct and work in collaboration with Properties Artisan and any other prop personnel, apprentices, interns or volunteers, including youth ages 9 to 18
+bull; Assemble rehearsal props and rehearsal furniture
+bull; During the rehearsal period, instruct volunteers involved with properties as to the use, placement, handling and care of the props and set dressings and ensure all props are maintained and replenished throughout the run.
+bull; Strike all props from the stage after each production closes and return all rented and borrowed props to their origin and all Civic property to the proper storage areas
+bull; Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals and dress rehearsals as needed, including being available/+rdquo;on call+rdquo; for all performances
+bull; Install props tables during load-in for all shows
+bull; Help create and manage the Props Budget, including keeping accurate records of expenditures, and submitting receipts in a timely manner
+bull; Organize, stock and maintain the properties shop, sewing area, and all prop storage areas, including maintaining a property/furniture inventory and database
+bull; Responsible for the Props and Scenery Rental process
Qualifications and Skill Requirements
+bull; Must possess a valid driver+rsquo;s license and be a driver in good standing
+bull; BA or BFA in Design or Technical Theatre Program strongly preferred
+bull; Prior experience as a Properties Master, Scenic Carpenter or similar experience constructing properties
+bull; Welding and sewing skills are highly desirable
+bull; Experience working with power and hand tools
+bull; Must have excellent communication skills and possess the ability to interact with diverse audiences, including artists, staff, patrons, and volunteers in a professional and confidential manner
+bull; Prior experience in CAD and Photoshop or equivalent is required; familiarity with MS Office Suite and QuickBooks is helpful
+bull; Firearms training and certification helpful, but not required
Physical Requirements:
+bull; Must be willing to adapt to a very flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and weekends being available during performances to assist with trouble shooting and/or crew coverage
+bull; Requires frequent standing, walking, climbing, reaching, and bending as well as frequent lifting up to 75 lbs.
+bull; Ability to navigate stairs and to climb and work from ladder at a height of at least 55 feet
+bull; Ability to work from a kneeling position
+bull; The physical ability to travel between the various CIVIC building locations is required
Work Environment
+bull; Work is primarily performed indoors
+bull; May be exposed to excessive noise during, installations, productions, and rehearsal.
