The Props Designer collaborates with the Artistic Director, Technical Director, and Stage Manager to create, acquire, and prepare all props used in productions. This role requires creativity, attention to detail, organization, and adaptability to support the artistic and technical needs of the theater. The ideal candidate will excel in meeting deadlines within a fast-paced environment and demonstrate strong organizational skills, proficiency with Google Docs and Sheets, and the ability to maintain and manage the theaters prop stock and database. Work as run crew for the production.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Script Analysis: Read scripts and conduct basic research for each production.
Props List: Create and maintain an accurate props list, updating as changes occur with input from the Director and Stage Manager.
Rehearsal Props: Consult with the Stage Manager and Director to gather and prepare appropriate rehearsal props.
Props Creation and Maintenance: Collect, pull, manufacture, fabricate, modify, purchase, and prepare all props. Repair and maintain props during rehearsals and performances.
Budget and Documentation: Work within production budgets, keeping all receipts and records for purchases to be reported and turned in.
Run Crew Duties: serve as part of the run crew for productions.
Strike and Storage: Strike props and return them to proper storage locations after each production. Assist with general strike tasks.
Workspace Management: Maintain organization, cleanliness, and safety in the prop shop and storage areas. Regularly inventory and upkeep the current stock of props and ensure accurate data entry in the props database.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Artistic Director, Technical Director, and Stage Manager to meet deadlines and resolve issues.
Additional Tasks: Perform other duties as assigned by the Technical Director.
Scene Shop Support: Assist in the scene shop when painting tasks are complete.
Skills and Qualifications
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
Proficiency with Google Docs and Sheets for documentation and collaboration.
Self-sufficient, motivated, and skilled in time management and prioritization.
Basic skills in fabricating, painting, and crafting.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail. and a creative eye.
Experience with firearms or special effects (a plus but not required).
Positive attitude and willingness to learn and grow within the role.
