One of the Midwest's oldest professional summer companies, Canterbury celebrates its 56th anniversary in 2024.

The Assistant Costumer works with the Costumer, to produce designs for 4 season shows, using existing stock and building special pieces as needed. Build requirements are minimal--perhaps 2-4 pieces per show.

Responsibilities also include maintaining and laundering costumes as necessary and maintaining the organization of the costume shop.

Budgets are minimal--usually covering fabric and notions or specialty makeup and novelty costume pieces.

Usually this position is filled by a graduate student, an upper level undergraduate, or a working professional who can afford to work for the experience and the modest salary offered. This person also fits into the summer camp atmosphere, and schedule, of typical Midwest summer stock.

Housing is included--usually shared bedrooms in houses or apartments.

The experience is typical of summer stock---resume building, experience, networking, and rewarding. Owing to our proximity to Chicago, many company members use Canterbury as a jumping-off point to move and pursue careers there. Also, Canterbury is located a short distance from the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan.
