One of the Midwest's oldest professional summer companies, Canterbury celebrates its 57th anniversary in 2025.
We seek a creative, organized person who will design sets for 3-4 of the summer shows, and act as technical director for all. Proven leadership experience is requited.
Our small proscenium stage requires minimal and creative sets. Also, our abundance of stock scenery (flats, doors, windows, units, furniture, etc.) are perfect for a designer who can be creative with available materials and small budgets (scene painting experience is useful).
As TD, this person should be able to manage the time and resources of 2-3 people to build all 4 summer sets, assign running crews for the shows, and supervise strikes/put-ins.
Usually this position is filled by a graduate student, an upper level undergraduate, or a working professional who can afford to work for the experience and the modest salary offered. This person also fits into the summer camp atmosphere, and schedule, of typical Midwest summer stock.
Housing is included--usually shared bedrooms in houses or apartments.
The experience is typical of summer stock---resume building, experience, networking, and rewarding. Owing to our proximity to Chicago, many company members use Canterbury as a jumping-off point to move and pursue careers there. Also, Canterbury is located a short distance from the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan.
